The Mechanic Heavy Equipment position involves maintaining and repairing railroad equipment for optimal performance and safety.

This is a full-time job (40 hrs/wk), subject to alternating shifts, night, on-call, weekends, overtime and holidays. A typical work week is 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday.

Travel is minimal.

Training for this position is company-paid on-the-job training.

Key responsibilities may include:

Disassembling, repairing, modifying, remanufacturing, and troubleshooting railroad roadway maintenance equipment and their operating and control systems. This may include:

  • Hydraulic systems and components (pumps, valves, motors, cylinders, filters, hoses).
  • Pneumatic systems (compressors, control valves, air braking systems, dryers).
  • Gasoline and diesel engine overhauls (fuel systems, diagnostics, tune-ups).
  • Driveline components (axles, bearings, ring and pinions, springs, roller chains, sprockets).
  • Final and planetary drive systems (gear reduction assemblies, structural and working components).

Daily work is conducted in a safety sensitive environment where the working conditions can include diverse and extreme weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet), walking and performing work on uneven surfaces, working around loud noises, fumes, and heavy/moving machinery.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Able to work now and in the future without BNSFs assistance (whether monetary, through sponsorship, or otherwise) in obtaining, maintaining, or extending employment authorization (including H-1B, STEM OPT/CPT, or TN nonimmigrant status).
  • I am at least 18 years of age, or will be by the anticipated start date listed in the job description
  • Able to work safely in the above working conditions
  • Able to work the above shift/hours
  • Able to read, write and communicate (speak, hear and understand) English
  • Able to lift and carry up to 60 lbs occasionally
  • Able to visually distinguish colors - red, blue, green, yellow and lunar (clear light)
  • Four years minimum of verifiable mechanical work experience or training
  • One year minimum of verifiable training and/or experience working with gasoline and diesel engines on large, industrial equipment
  • Three months minimum of verifiable training and/or experience with electrical and/or gas welding
  • One year minimum of verifiable training and/or experience with electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic diagrams and schematics
  • Able to use hands to perform activities involving holding, grasping, turning and pulling
  • Occasionally climb ladders, get on/off equipment and work from various heights including making repairs on top of heavy equipment and trucks
  • Able to work in conditions with loud noise and fumes; work on/around heavy/moving machinery; bend, lift, walk, stand, sit for extended time; and use hand tools

Union membership is with the International Association of Machinist and Aerospace Workers and union dues are required per union agreement.
