Watch Engineers

Columbia University is seeking Watch Engineers for our Facilities and Operations team. Come join NYC’s only Ivy League school as we launch our new campus and reimagine what a 21st-century urban university can be! This trade is primarily responsible for the maintenance and repair of the District Energy System, which includes a 6,000-ton refrigeration plant “electric and steam turbine-driven compressors” as well as a dual-fuel-fired water tube boiler plant at 150 psi operating pressure. (The normal electric power service is supplied from Con Edison.) This is a TWU Local 241 union position. 

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain, repair, and operate system equipment and auxiliary system; utilize computer-monitoring systems while working independently or under limited supervision and direction in accordance with sound engineering practices

  • Work in collaboration with all plant-related trades and management

  • Observe electrical switchboard and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) and/or BMS system to inform decisions on system operations

 

Requirements:

  • High school graduate or equivalent

  • Minimum of one year’s experience in plant operations and maintenance

  • Current NYC Stationary Engineer license for high-pressure steam

  • Current NYC Refrigeration System Operation certificate of qualification

  • All licenses and certifications required by city, state and governing agencies
