The Senior Project Engineer (Sr. PE) plays a key role in supporting the successful planning and execution of construction projects. Working closely with the Project Manager and Superintendent, the Sr. PE takes ownership of project documentation, procurement, and change management processes. On large projects, they act as a core team member; on smaller jobs, they may lead day-to-day operations with limited oversight. A strong grasp of XL Constructions systems, processes, and technologies enables the Sr. PE to drive quality, efficiency, and value across all project phases. Sr. Project Engineers must be adaptable, detail-oriented, and collaborative professionals capable of managing multiple priorities, producing accurate work, and consistently meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Key Responsibilities Preconstruction & Project Setup
  • Support formal project pursuits by contributing to presentations and proposal development.
  • Lead or assist with bidder instructions and bid package assembly; conduct quantity takeoffs and prepare estimates.
  • Engage trade partners through outreach to improve bid coverage and interest.
  • Assist with project setup in Vista and development of the Control Estimate.
  • Execute components of the subcontractor buyout and selection process.
Project Execution & Coordination
  • Perform core project management tasks on small to mid-size projects or scopes within larger projects, including subcontract administration, cost forecasting, billing support, and leading meetings.
  • Manage the procurement process with limited oversight, resolving schedule-driven material challenges as needed.
  • Participate in or lead Owner-Architect-Contractor (OAC) meetings; prepare accurate and timely meeting minutes.
  • Manage document control processes, including distribution and revision tracking for drawings, specs, permits, and RFIs.
  • Lead or support submittal coordination, ensuring timely and accurate logging and communication.
Change Management & Cost Control
  • Estimate, track, and validate project change orders, pricing events (PCCs/EWAs), and subcontractor COs.
  • Present change orders to clients with confidence and limited oversight.
  • Support project forecasting and participate in monthly billing preparation.
Field Support & Quality Control
  • Collaborate with Superintendents to update and manage project schedules.
  • Monitor and report on work-in-place and lead or assist with field quality control inspections.
  • Support field issue resolution and proactively manage punch-list and closeout processes, including warranty, O&M, LEED, and as-built documentation.
Client & Team Engagement
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with clients, design teams, and subcontractors.
  • Model professional communication, ethical behavior, and XLs values in all interactions.
  • Mentor and support the growth and development of junior project team members.
  • Champion XLs safety policies and ensure practices are embedded across project activities.
Qualifications & Experience
  • 35 years of experience as a Project Engineer or Engineer in the commercial construction industry.
  • Experience with projects in healthcare, corporate office, life sciences/technology, or education preferred.
  • Bachelors degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or equivalent work experience.
  • Strong knowledge of construction materials, building methods, and project management processes.
  • Familiarity with building permit approval workflows and jurisdictional compliance.
Technical Skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Vista (Sage), Procore, Bluebeam, Primavera (P6), Timberline Estimating, and On-Screen Takeoff.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including meeting facilitation and client-facing interactions.
  • Highly organized with the ability to prioritize, manage time, and meet deadlines.
  • OSHA 10 Certification required.
Compensation & Benefits The base salary range for this position is $105,000 to $125,000 annually , in accordance with California pay transparency laws.
