Summary/Objective
Underground Drill/Trench operator responsible for completing assigned duties in a timely and efficient manner by specified deadlines while safely operating appropriate equipment to achieve results as dictated by the scope of work and customer expectations while maintaining a high quality of work.
Essential Functions
- Operates horizontal directional drill for installing conduit and cable to customer design.
- Operate Min-Ex/trencher for installing conduit and cable to customer design.
- Complete as built maps to customer specifications.
- Some underground hand digging, setting pedestals, vaults and pulling cable will be required.
- Work alongside, train and delegate duties to laborer.
- Maintains company equipment per service requirements and safety guidelines.
- Attend safety meetings and follow safety rules while working.
- Follow all rules and procedures in company handbook.
- Flexibility to work on-call rotation or emergency situations when needed.
- Other duties as assigned.

- Knowledge of city codes for underground work such as permits, restoration, traffic control.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Working knowledge underground machines such as trencher, mini-ex, and directional bore
Required Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- 1-2 years of experience in underground drilling operations including cable/fiber construction practices.
- Knowledge of depths and placements.
Work Environment
- Ability to work in various environments with moderate to loud noise levels.
- Majority outside work, includes inclement weather with a wide range of temperatures and element including dry, windy, and wet conditions.
- Exposure to traffic, vibration, moving and mechanical parts, overhead hazards, electricity and exposed energized components and confined spaces.
- Walking on normal to uneven ground possible.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
- Flexibility to work beyond 40 hours per week and weekends.
Travel
- Some travel may be required.
Additional Eligibility Qualifications
- This is a DOT regulated position and it requires a Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) to be obtained every year during employment and a DOT Physical every 1-2 years.
