General Definition of Work

Performs intermediate skilled trades work operating and maintaining equipment at lift stations, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Utilities Lift Station Supervisor.

Examples of Duties

  • Performs scheduled preventative maintenance on all equipment; performs troubleshooting to diagnose and make skilled repairs; performs on call duty response.
  • Visits stations and performs routine inspections to facility; maintains the appearance of stations.
  • Enters information into department specific software; creates and completes work orders and preventative maintenance; researches cost effective options for inventory.
  • Responds to inquiries and complaints; assists contractors.
  • Fills in for senior mechanic when needed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of related industry, organization, and department policies, practices, and procedures; thorough knowledge of related industry, organization, and departmental legal guides, recommendations, best practices, ordinances, and laws; thorough knowledge of industry standard and department specific equipment; thorough knowledge of standard office and department specific software; thorough knowledge of operation and maintenance manuals; general knowledge of blue prints; general knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions of the work; general knowledge of the installation, repair and maintenance of industry standard equipment; skill in the use and care of tools of the trade; ability to make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions and decimals; ability to compute rates, ratios and percentages; ability to make various calculations required for lift station operation; ability to determine improper operation of water and wastewater pumping and treatment equipment, and to take proper remedial action; ability to follow oral and written directions; ability to supervise the work others; ability to develop and maintain an effective working relationship with associates, supervisors, and the general public.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED and minimal experience working with lift stations, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling and lifting, frequently requires standing, walking, sitting, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions and occasionally requires climbing or balancing; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm's length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, insects, and wildlife, exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment, frequently requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to the risk of electrical shock; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

  • Valid commercial driver's license with Class B endorsement.
