POSITION Plant Operations Supervisor

DESCRIPTION

I. POSITION FUNCTION SUMMARY:

Under direction of the Plant Operations Manager, the Plant Operations Supervisor provides leadership and supervision of employees in the respective processing operations of grading, packing, shipping, and storing of product to customers.

II. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

General Duties & Responsibilities

1. See DEPARTMENT JOB ASSIGNMENTS beginning on page 2.

2. Maintains andplies with total quality controls according to USDA standards relating to inspection, grading, sorting, handling, and shipments that ensure NAPI's concerns on food safety.

3. Be responsible for the daily operations and maintenance of all plant equipment to achieve daily goals established by the site processing plan.

4. Lead and direct others in plant processes.

5. Develop and monitor good housekeeping practices and follow all safety policies ensuring a safe work environment.

6. Adjust, repair, and service farm machinery and notify Manager when any machinery malfunctions.

7. Direct and monitor the activities of work crews engaged in packaging/processing activities.

8. Guide products on conveyors to regulate flow through machines and to discard diseased or rotten agricultural products.

9. Position boxes, bags, or attach bags at discharge ends to machinery to catch products, removing and closing full containers.

10. Manipulate controls to set, activate, and adjust mechanisms on machinery.

11. Observe and listen to machinery operations to detect equipment malfunctions.

Supervisory Duties and Responsibilities

12. Supervises, coordinates and reviews all activities of NAPI's daily sales transactions, and other assigned scales processes.

13. Leads, directs and supervisors reporting personnel including work procedures, workloads and work schedules by directing the workflow in such a manner as to promote productive efficiency of employees.

14. Assists with managing performance of assigned direct reports and others in the work unit; assist Plant Operations Manager with conducting employee performance reviews for assigned staff, properly documents corrective action, performance improvement plans, and disciplinary actions, and salary adjustments in accordance with NAPI policy.

15. Ensures a safe working environment, and overseespliance with applicable OSHA and other laws, regulations, and work rules concerning environmental safety and health by employees

16. Supervises the work unit in keeping with applicable laws and regulations; and NAPI's policies, guidelines and Navajo affirmative action policies.

17. Establishes and effective flow ofmunication and information to ensure that problems can be responsibly solved and that support is provided to the staff as needed.

Other

DEPARTMENT JOB ASSIGNMENTS

Bean Plant

1. Calibrate packaging equipment for sales demand, bagging machines, volume poly bagger, 50 and 100# and platform scale for totes.

2. Reads and applies data from Famous Software for inventory inputting and shipping needs.

3. Operates processing facility according to worksheet orders given by the Plant Operations Manager, Crop Manager and Scale Clerk.

4. Diagnoses and interprets processing and shipping problems.

5. Provides cross training to other department personnel in performing palletizing techniques, grading techniques, bagging techniques, control panel operation, forklift truck operation, inventory counting techniques, and performing basic maintenance to conveyor systems and packaging equipment.

6. Assists in the preparation of harvest storage plans.

7. Assists and coordinates meetings with sale staff, scales staff, and other departmental staff.

8. Ensure all processing and receiving machines are in good operating condition to minimize downtime.

9. Conducts initial inspection on packing facility, packing equipment, conveyor system, bagging machine, forklift trucks,puter system, and NAPI vehicle before start-ups.

10. Submit and request for Federal Inspection and Documents.

11. Maintain a safe professional relationship with fellow employees as well as customers.

Fresh Pack

Granary/Pellet Mill

1. Assist the Plant Operations Manager in the production of Pellets for feed purposes.

2. Achieve quality results through plant equipment adjustments based on plant monitoring information captured during daily production to meet all quality standards on stored pellet products.

3. Ensure cleanups in plant to pass inspection by site manager to eliminate the possibility of mixture of a variety of grains for pellet production.

4. Achieve accurate inventory counts by assisting the Plant Manager in month-end physical counts on pellet storage, pellet products and reconciling against SAP.

5. Spray fertilizer or pesticide solutions to control insects, fungus, weed growth, and diseases using hand sprayers.

6. Weigh pellet-filled containers, and record weights and other identifying information

7. Drive trucks to haul crops, supplies, tools, or farm workers

8. Load and unload crops or containers of materials manually or using conveyors, hand trucks, forklifts, or transfer augers.

9. Load hoppers, containers, or conveyors to feed machines with products using forklifts, transfer augers, suction gates, shovels or pitchforks.

10. Operating and maintaining controls of the steam boilers used to produce pellet products.

III. POSITION AUTHORITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:

General:

Position has a moderate level of line responsibility and moderate-level authority to make independent decisions over an assigned department or function. A person in this position has a high level of responsibility for a key operation or function.

Decisions will have a high degree of impact on operations or services. Errors may result in significant disruption of operations or services or damage to operational activities. Failure to establish and monitor work schedules for the Department will result in an inability to meet deadlines and will delay thepletion of records and other projects.

The Plant Operations Supervisor works under general supervision of the Plant Operations Manager. Employee performs moderate level,plex management work, and performs a moderate level of analysis and problem-solving with a high degree of independence and discretion.

Supervision Exercised:

The Plant Operations Supervisor has supervisory authority over all assigned staff to other employees within the department. Determines work procedures, schedules and priorities. In addition to direct supervisory authority of this position, the Plant Operations Supervisor may retain functional authority over specific projects or areas of responsibility as specified in this Job Description or otherwise delegated by the Plant Operations Manager.

Education and Experience:

Required:

? Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in Agricultural Business, Agricultural Economics, or directly related discipline.

? Three (3) years progressive experience in agri-business, agronomics, marketing, logistic, and administering contracts, including supervisory experience in an agricultural environment.
