DEFINITION

Equipment Mechanic

To perform skilled and semi-skilled work involved in the mechanical servicing, maintenance and repair of the Countys fleet of automotive and other equipment; to maintain simple records related to shop operations; and to perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Heavy Equipment Mechanic

To perform skilled and semi-skilled work involved in the mechanical servicing, maintenance and repair of the Countys fleet of Fire Department vehicles and equipment, heavy construction equipment and other equipment; to maintain simple records related to shop operations; and to perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Equipment Mechanic

Conducts safety inspections on transit and passenger vehicles.

Diagnoses and repairs computer controlled systems, electrical systems, brakes, steering, suspensions, drive train components, differentials, transfer cases, transmissions, gasoline- and diesel-powered engines, HVAC systems, hydraulic systems on vehicles and light equipment.

Designs and installs emergency response equipment in vehicles.

Inspects and replaces tires as needed.

Performs scheduled preventive maintenance of all County vehicles and equipment.

Performs minor body work as needed, including painting.

Performs routine welding and fabrication work on vehicles and heavy equipment.

Makes and repairs snow chains for vehicles.

Performs field repairs of vehicles as necessary, including during adverse weather / environmental conditions.

Orders and picks up parts and supplies necessary for assigned maintenance and repair work.

Interacts with vehicle / equipment operators to help determine service and repair needs.

Operates hoists and overhead cranes.

Maintains garage, shop and equipment in a clean and orderly condition.

Performs all work in compliance with applicable laws and regulations, County and department policies and procedures, and standards of quality and safety.

Maintains accurate and complete work records.

Trains new mechanics as assigned.

Heavy Equipment Mechanic (In addition to the above)

Diagnoses and repairs computer controlled systems, electrical systems, brakes, steering, suspensions, drive train components, differentials, transfer cases, transmissions, gasoline- and diesel-powered engines, HVAC systems, hydraulic systems on Fire Department vehicles, trucks and heavy equipment.

Repairs snowplow blades.

Overhauls gasoline- and diesel-powered engines.

Performs complex welding and fabrication work, including manufacturing special tools and equipment for the shop.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Both Equipment Mechanic and Heavy Equipment Mechanic:

Education:

High school diploma or GED equivalent.

Additional Requirements:

Possession of a valid California Class B operators license is desirable. Under certain circumstances, the Human Resources Director may accept a valid drivers license from another state if applicant acknowledges his/her intent to acquire a California drivers license within three months by signing an acknowledgement form.

Equipment Mechanic:

Experience:

Two years of experience in the maintenance and repair of automotive equipment.

Heavy Equipment Mechanic:

Experience:

Three years of increasingly responsible experience in the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel-powered heavy automotive and road construction equipment, trucks and automobiles.

Modern principles, practices, equipment, materials and tools used in the servicing, maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment.

Gasoline- and diesel-powered engines, and their proper operation.

Safety regulations and precautions pertaining to vehicle servicing.

Safe and proper use of assigned equipment and tools.

Basic record-keeping techniques.

Basic mathematics.

Heavy Equipment Mechanic: (In addition to the above)

Safety regulations and precautions pertaining to the servicing and repair of heavy equipment and fire/emergency response equipment.

Practices, methods, tools and equipment of the welding trade.

Math related to hydraulics.

Ability to:

Read and understand maintenance and repair manuals and related diagrams.

Diagnose mechanical defects accurately and make necessary repairs to equipment in a timely manner.

Heavy Equipment Mechanic: (In addition to the above)

Safely and effectively perform welding and fabrication work.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. Incumbent drives on surface streets and operates equipment on unpaved surfaces to diagnose mechanical problems; works around machinery and equipment; and risks exposure to traffic hazards, electrical currents, adverse weather conditions, temperature and noise extremes, wetness, humidity, heights, fumes, dusts, odors, solvents, grease/oil, skin irritants, toxic or caustic chemicals, vibration. Worker occasionally works past normal office hours to complete assignments.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Requires the mobility to perform office and vehicle maintenance duties. Requires the ability to sit and intermittently walk, stand, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and reach while performing office duties and/or maintenance work; lift and/or move up to 50 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally; use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools and controls. Must be able to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, communicating with others, reading and writing, and operating office and shop equipment. Must be able to use a telephone to communicate verbally and a keyboard to communicate through written means, to review information and enter/retrieve data, to see and read characters on a computer screen.
