Description

Under general supervision, performs professional engineering work related to the design, construction, inspection, and maintenance of bridges. Responsibilities also include roadway resurfacing, sidewalk repairs, and guardrail installation to ensure safety, structural integrity, and compliance with regulatory standards.

Examples of Duties

  • Assist in the planning, design, and oversight of construction and maintenance projects for bridges, including detailed inspections to assess structural integrity, identify necessary repairs, and ensure compliance with safety standards.
  • Prepares technical reports, inspection records, and maintenance recommendations based on finding from field assessments.
  • Coordinates with contractors, consultants, and other departments to ensure project objectives and timelines are met. Monitors construction sites to verify work quality and adherence to project specifications and safety regulations.
  • Assists in estimating project cost and preparing bid documents and contract specifications. Maintains comprehensive records of inspections, repairs, and bridge inventory in accordance with federal, state and local requirements.
  • Supports the procurement process of engineering consultant services
  • Develops and manages procurement of contracted services for sidewalk repairs, guardrail installation, roadway resurfacing, and bridge maintenance/inspections.
  • Consults with & arranges meetings with contractors to coordinate project activities.
  • Administers contracts and inspects contractor work, approving provisional payments, and ensuring compliance with contractual terms.
  • Estimate plans for bidding & construction of services, administers contracts, inspect the work of contractors, and approve provisional payments.
  • Reviews and manages project financial information to keep projects on budget and on schedule.
  • Does related work as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree with coursework in civil or environmental engineering, or equivalent combination of education and experience to successfully perform the essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of modern civil engineering methods and techniques; through knowledge of land and engineering survey systems, methods and techniques; thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of engineering drafting; possess excellent communication skills; knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and position specific software; ability to effectively work with City Officials, employees, contractors, State and Federal Officials and the general public; ability to prepare technical reports.

Physical Requirements: This work requires the knowledge of modern civil engineering principles, methods, and techniques. Knowledge of land and engineering survey systems, including associated methods and practices. Proficient in the principles, practices, and techniques of engineering drafting. Ability to prepare clear, concise, and technical accurate reports and documentation. Strong communication skills, both verbal and written. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite. Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with employees, contractors, City and State officials, and members of the general public. Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple task and meet deadlines.

Special Requirements

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of North Carolina or Engineering Intern in pursuit of North Carolina Professional Engineer registration.
  • Valid driver's license in the Sate of North Carolina
  • CAD and GIS experience preferred.
