Under the direction of the Fire Chief or designee, the Fleet Manager / Mechanic oversees the Fire Districts fleet of vehicles and Fire/EMS/Wildland apparatus. Responsibilities include managing fleet readiness, coordinating or performing maintenance and repairs, and ensuring accurate documentation. This position also develops fleet policies, maintenance schedules, and safety procedures.

The position supports budgeting, expense tracking, and long-term fleet replacement planning. It includes facilitation of the annual pump testing program and participation in ongoing training to maintain proficiency in fleet management and maintenance. The mechanic performs skilled diagnostics and repairs, ensuring all apparatus meet regulatory standards and are operationally ready for emergency response. Complex repairs requiring specialized facilities are coordinated with the Storey County Shop or outsourced as needed. Additional duties may be assigned based on district needs.

Distinguishing Characteristics

The Fleet Manager / Mechanic position is essential to maintaining Storey County Fire Protection Districts fleet readiness, supporting the safety of fire personnel, and ensuring compliance with all applicable standards and regulations. The position is responsible for completing accurate inspection reports, preparing purchase orders, and reviewing invoices promptly and with attention to detail, all under minimal supervision.

Licensing, Education, & Other Requirements
  • Any combination of training, education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities. A typical way to gain the required knowledge and ability is:
    1. High school diploma or equivalent education; and
    2. At least two (2) years experience in commercial medium to heavy truck or general automotive maintenance and repair; or
    3. Service writing or shop management, supplemented by specialized training or certifications; or
    4. A combination of experience and education necessary to fulfill the duties and responsibilities of the position listed below.

    Required Certifications, Licenses and Registration:

    The following certifications and licensing must be obtained within 12 months of employment:

    • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) T-Series Heavy Truck Certifications:
      • T2: Diesel Engines
      • T4: Brakes
      • T6: Electrical Systems
    • Nevada Class A Commercial Drivers License
    • Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Certifications:
      • F1: Maintenance, Inspection, and Testing of Fire Apparatus
      • F3: Fire Pumps & Accessories

    The duties listed below are examples of the work typically performed by an employee in this position. Performance of these functions is the reason the job exists. An employee may not be assigned all duties listed and may be assigned duties which are not listed below.

    1. Fleet Maintenance and Repair
      • Manage maintenance of over 60 Fire/EMS/Wildland apparatus and support vehicles.
      • Perform preventative maintenance: oil changes, fluid checks, brake inspections, etc.
      • Diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical issues within capabilities.
      • Coordinate complex repairs with the Storey County Shop or external vendors.
      • Maintain accurate records for each vehicle and piece of equipment.
    2. Tire Maintenance
      • Conduct tire rotations, repairs, and replacements in compliance with DOT standards.
      • Maintain detailed tire records to support safety and accountability.
    3. Pump Testing and Certification
      • Perform annual pump testing on all fire apparatus, ensuring all systems meet regulatory standards and recording all test results.
      • Identify and coordinate any repairs or adjustments needed following pump testing to ensure continued operational readiness.
    4. Aerial Ladder Inspections
      • Schedule and coordinate annual inspections of all aerial ladders to ensure compliance with NFPA and OSHA standards.
      • Document inspection results and refer any required repairs or adjustments to qualified vendors as needed.
    5. Fleet Management and Coordination
      • Monitor and maintain overall fleet readiness, prioritizing work requests based on operational needs and available resources.
      • Manage the fleet maintenance schedule to minimize downtime and maximize the availability of vehicles and equipment for emergency response.
      • Coordinate complex repairs with the Storey County Shop or outsource to external vendors, including managing vendor communications and tracking service completion.
    6. Recordkeeping and Compliance
      • Maintain detailed records of all maintenance, repairs, and inspections to ensure compliance with applicable standards, including NFPA, OSHA, and DOT.
      • Track and log maintenance activities, tire inspections, pump tests, ladder inspections, and other regulatory checks in the fleet management system for easy access and audit readiness.
    7. Inventory and Supplies Management
      • Monitor and maintain inventory of essential parts, tools, and supplies required for routine maintenance and emergency repairs.
      • Order replacement parts and supplies as needed, staying within budgetary guidelines and coordinating with the districts procurement office for larger purchases.
    8. Safety and Quality Assurance
      • Adhere to all safety regulations and procedures to ensure the safe operation and maintenance of fleet assets.
      • Stay current with industry standards, best practices, and emerging technologies to maintain a high level of expertise in fleet maintenance and emergency vehicle repair.
    9. Vendor Coordination and Outsourcing
      • Assess work requests to determine if tasks can be completed in-house based on complexity, location, and available tools.
      • Refer complex or specialized tasks to the Storey County Shop or qualified external vendors, and oversee the outsourcing process, including obtaining quotes, scheduling services, and reviewing completion reports.
    10. Fleet Reporting and Documentation
      • Prepare regular reports on fleet status, scheduled maintenance, and overall operational readiness.
      • Provide recommendations for vehicle replacements and upgrades based on performance data, maintenance history, and current condition.
    11. Emergency Response
      • Provide on-call support for emergency repairs during critical incidents or disasters to ensure uninterrupted fleet operations and response readiness.
