Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a skilled Building Controls Specialist to join our Facilities team. This critical role involves supporting building automation systems, collaborating with maintenance teams and contractors, and optimizing energy efficiency across our site-wide operations. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring the reliable operation of our building control systems while contributing to our mission of scientific excellence.
Key Responsibilities
System Operations & Maintenance
- Install, configure, and maintain building automation control systems and components including sensors, actuators, and control panels
- Manage and maintain Building Automation System servers, including system updates, backups, and performance optimization
- Perform routine inspections, preventative maintenance, and repairs on control systems to ensure optimal performance and minimize downtime
- Conduct calibration of instruments and control systems to maintain accurate readings and process control
Technical Support & Troubleshooting
- Diagnose and resolve mechanical and control system issues using diagnostic tools and technical expertise
- Support Building Maintenance mechanics and trade contractors during system start-ups
- Respond to system alarms and implement corrective actions to maintain operational continuity
Collaboration & Communication
- Maintain effective communication with building users, contractors, and project team members
- Participate actively as a team member to facilitate goal accomplishment and promote collaborative problem-solving
- Manage multiple concurrent projects while meeting deadlines
- Share relevant information and promote teamwork across organizational boundaries
Position Requirements
Education
- Associate's degree in Electronics, Electro-mechanical Systems, Computer Sciences, or related field
- OR Completion of a vocational program in a relevant technical discipline
- OR Equivalent combination of education and experience
Technical Expertise
- Strong understanding of control systems and related components
- Experience with building mechanical systems including air handlers, pumping systems, chilled water systems, and hot water systems
- Proficiency in operating, troubleshooting, and installing Direct Digital Control Building Automation Systems (DDC-BAS)
- Knowledge of automatic controls, system repairs, alarm response procedures, and performance optimization

Preferred Qualifications
- Programming experience with current and/or legacy Metasys system configuration, graphics development, and control logic implementation
- Previous experience in laboratory, research, or campus environment
- Additional certifications in building automation systems
This position can be hired at one of two levels; the selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level (PT3 or PT4) dependent upon the depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills. The minimum requirements of the two levels are as follows:
PT3 Level: Bachelors and 4+ years or Masters and 2+ years of experience or equivalent. The expected pay range for this level is $83,264 - $131,342
PT4 Level: Bachelors and 6+ years or Masters and 4+ years of experience or equivalent. The expected pay range for this level is $102,694 - $162,020
