MOTOR EQUIPMENT OPERATOR II

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves performing duties in connection with the operation of construction trucks, maintenance equipment, snowplows and sanders. This position differs from the Motor Equipment Operator I due to the more complex nature of equipment operated requiring greater skill along with increased responsibility for safety of others. The incumbent is required to perform manual duties related to operation and upkeep of equipment when not operating equipment. The work is performed under direct supervision and the incumbent is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of their equipment. May be assigned to operate more complex equipment on a relief or training basis. The incumbent is expected to have enough knowledge of assigned equipment to be able to ascertain when the equipment is not operating properly. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

Operates motor equipment such as tractors (may have rotary mower attached), double axle dump trucks (may have snow removal equipment attached), wrecker, high pressure street flusher, tilt trailer and other types of equipment classified as medium duty used in the construction and maintenance of highways and other public works projects;

Performs routine upkeep maintenance such as checking fluids and lights, on assigned equipment;

Cuts trees, weeds and bushes, does manual road patching and traffic flagging in connection with highway maintenance;

Assists with the setting of guard rails and posts; Performs a variety of manual tasks;

May, on assignment, operate other types of automotive equipment.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Good knowledge of the operation of assigned construction and snow removal equipment and other medium duty equipment;

Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; Willingness to respond to emergencies and perform overtime work; Willingness to work in adverse weather conditions;

Mechanical aptitude; Dependability;

Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma and one year of experience in the operation of light road maintenance equipment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT AT TIME OF APPOINTMENT: Possession of the appropriate level Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT WHEN EMPLOYED AT THE TOWN OF CHENANGO: As needed, the incumbent will assist in maintenance activities on motor vehicles, equipment and tools.
