CLASSIFICATION SPECIFICATION
CLASSIFICATION TITLE: TRANSIT MECHANIC SUPERVISOR
PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION
The purpose of this classification is to perform skilled/manual work functions associated with inspecting, servicing, and repairing various types of electric, diesel, and/or gasoline powered vehicles and equipment, maintaining shop cleanliness, bus shelters, and buildings, and carrying out administrative tasks.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Consults with assigned staff to review work requirements, status, and problems; assists with problem situations; provides direction, advice, and technical expertise.
Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals; interviews, selects and trains new employees in the absence of the Transit Superintendent.
Receives/prepares work orders; oversees shop details and sets priorities for work to be completed; may train and instruct other mechanics in the operation of equipment and vehicles as needed.
Inspects and diagnoses mechanical malfunctions of various equipment and vehicles; examines parts for damage or excessive wear; adjusts, and/or replaces necessary units and related parts.
Performs general mechanical repair, routine service, and preventive maintenance functions such as dismantling, overhauling, repairing, and reassembling engines, checking fluid levels, changing oil and filters, replacing batteries and hoses, greasing equipment, and washing/cleaning equipment and vehicles.
Inspects, tests, and repairs engine components/parts and systems; maintains, repairs, and replaces complex electrical, hydraulic, and air operated mechanisms.
Performs machinist, arc, acetylene, and sheet metal welding, and fabricating functions in repair/modification of vehicles and various equipment.
Operates a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools associated with repairing, maintaining, and testing vehicles and equipment, which may include mechanic tools, welding machine, cutting torch, and diagnostic instruments.
Performs pre-trip inspections and regular periodic service checks; washes and cleans buses and other vehicles.
Orders and/or purchases necessary parts for equipment and vehicle repairs, orders fuel and various supplies.
Responds to routine requests for information or assistance from vendors, employees, supervisors, or other individuals; responds to requests for service.
Prepares and/or receives various forms, reports, logs, work orders, requisitions, or other documentation associated with daily responsibilities of this position; completes, processes, and/or forwards as appropriate.
Maintains regular and predictable in person attendance during regular business hours of the City of Henderson is required.
Must undergo and successfully complete drug test and alcohol screening prior to employment and undergo and successfully complete future drug test and/or alcohol screening pursuant to the Citys Drug and Alcohol policy.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
Performs general building and bus shelter maintenance; performs general cleaning/housekeeping tasks associated with maintaining shop areas.
Cleans and maintains tools and equipment in good working condition; reports faulty equipment for repair.
Performs other related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or GED; supplemented by vocational/technical training in mechanical/vehicle repair; supplemented by three (3) years of previous experience and/or training that includes mechanical repair on gasoline vehicles and equipment; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid Commercial Drivers License (CDL) including appropriate endorsement(s). May be required to obtain and maintain specialty certifications relating to specific vehicle system repairs.

Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; the ability to calculate decimals and percentages; the ability to utilize principles of fractions; and the ability to interpret graphs.
