Do you have a strong background in building maintenance and a commitment to public safety and service? The City of Hampton is seeking a dependable and skilled Building Monitor/Maintenance Mechanic to help maintain our public facilities, ensure secure after-hours access, and support a variety of trades-based repair and maintenance tasks. This role is essential in keeping our city spaces safe, functional, and welcoming to the community.
Minimum Requirements- Requires a high school diploma or GED
- One year of experience (journeymen's card preferred) in one of the following building trades: carpentry, roofing, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, or related field.
- One year of experience in methods, materials, and equipment that are required for the installation and maintenance of building components in other trades is desired.
- Experience and knowledge of building codes and regulations.
- Must successfully pass pre-employment testing for alcohol and controlled substances; will be subject to random testing while an incumbent in this position.
- Must possess a valid drivers license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record based on the City of Hamptons criteria.
- Performs under the general supervision of the Superintendent of Facilities Maintenance & Operations.
- Independently prioritizes and assigns work to accomplish team and department goals.
- Requires interaction with other team leaders, customers, contractors, and tradespeople.
- Makes on-the-spot decisions in response to discussions with customers or when faced with unusual circumstances.
- Require cross-training in all facility maintenance trades.
- Incumbent is subject to call-out and may be required to carry an electronic signaling device, which enables him/her to respond to emergency situations.
- Work conditions can be disagreeable and can be potentially dangerous.
- Requires effective communication with internal and external customers.
- Must possess own hand tools.
- May require shift work to include nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call emergency standby.
- The incumbent may be considered essential personnel during City emergencies or at the direction of the City Manager which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
- This is a non-exempt position.
- Monitors and controls after-hours building access. Welcomes and directs after-hour visitors.
- Performs a variety of responsible and routine installation, maintenance, and repair of building components and systems (including but not limited to doors, locks and locksets, hardware, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, glass, roofing, etc.) in city facilities, in compliance with state and local codes.
- Inspects contract performance of janitorial services. Coordinates work with other trades as required to ensure complete jobs.
- Procures all necessary permits, and schedules inspections as required.
- Coordinates multi-trade and contracted work with a team and other teams in the Facility Maintenance Division.
- Performs work in a skilled trade for facility maintenance and repairs.
- Demonstrates punctuality and regular attendance.
- Ability to maintain records, ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to work independently and establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with the general public and other personnel.
- Ability to safely operate tools and equipment.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
