District Recruitment for Rapides Parish:

The overall function of this position is to serve as a direct first line supervisor. This position is located in the District 08/Maintenance Section/Unit 510 of the Department of Transportation and Development and reports directly to the Parish Highway Maintenance Superintendent. The incumbent must be self-motivated and be able to perform duties many times without supervision or with minimal supervision and also be able to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise. The incumbent will participate in DOTD structured training programs as appropriate and attend all continuing education classes and conferences deemed necessary to facilitate the performance of required tasks.

While in official capacity, DOTD employees must comply with applicable Louisiana and Civil Service laws, rules, and regulations, as well as DOTD policies, procedures, manuals, and directives.

Minimum Qualifications

Four years of experience in the construction, maintenance, or repair of roads, bridges, levees, drainage facilities, wharfs, buildings, or grounds; OR Four years of experience in the operation or maintenance of industrial or heavy mobile equipment. NOTE: Experience in any combination of the qualifying fields will be accepted.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

65% Supervises, leads, directs, and trains a work group in the safe performance of : patching, leveling, overlaying, partial and full depth removal and replacement, repair, cleaning of asphaltic concrete and Portland cement concrete pavements as well as bridge decks; maintenance of aggregate shoulders; cleaning and reshaping ditches with a motor patrol or excavator, removing and disposing of trees and debris from roadways; utilizes various light and heavy construction equipment combined with hand tools.

20% Plans, organizes, and records all activities and resources used on a daily basis. Completes vehicle inspection reports, PPRs, accident investigation reports and complaint records. Monitors employees and work site for safe proper work methods and provides on the job training. Ensures all equipment is properly used, operated safely, and maintained in good working order.

5% May be required to perform a wide variety of assigned duties and tasks necessary to accomplish the overall mission of the gang or section.

5% Shall be responsible to respond to emergencies after normal working hours, in all types of weather conditions. Falling trees in the roadway, snow and icy conditions, traffic accidents, and water over the roadways are some examples of emergencies, and corrective action is expected to ensure safety to the public.

5% May be required to perform other duties as necessary including, but not limited to, emergency/disaster support activities.

Position-Specific Details:

The incumbent is required to possess the following specialized knowledge, skills, abilities:
Maintain a Class A CDL license and meet all structured training requirements for this position.
Requires random drug testing.
Required to stand, sit, squat, walk, bend, and climb on and off equipment and trailer, as well as lifting up to fifty pounds on a daily basis.
Required to work in all types of inclement weather and conditions.
Perform manual labor work tasks, to occasionally perform the duties of a Parish Highway Maintenance Superintendent in his absence.

Use a cell phone, computer, and mobile PDA in the performance of normal job duties.
