JOB TITLE: Road Maintenance Operator I
SALARY: $20.43 per hour
This is a Classified/Full Time /Non-Exempt (FLSA)
DESCRIPTION: Performs working level skilled tasks in the operation and maintenance of light to heavy-duty equipment as needed to construct, maintain or repair county roads, bridges, culverts and flood channels.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education & Experience
Sufficient education and training to demonstrate an aptitude or ability to perform above and related duties
and
One (1) year of experience in operation and maintenance of medium and heavy sized equipment.
or
an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Mandatory Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Other Qualifications:
- Read, write, speak and comprehend the English language.
- Working knowledge of various light to heavy equipment; hazards and safety precautions related to
construction and equipment operation; traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations; construction
methods and procedures typical to county service systems; equipment parts and basic preventive
maintenance for the same.
- Skill in the operation of heavy mechanized equipment as required by the position, i.e., Roller,
Sweeper, 10-Wheel Dump, Loader, Belly Dump, Track Loader, Cat/Dozer, Road Grader, Sanders, Water
Truck, etc.
- Ability to follow OSHA regulations related to hazardous conditions; operate simple to complex
heavy duty equipment; operate heavy equipment in various conditions; perform manual tasks for
sustained periods of time; perform minor equipment maintenance and repair; follow written and
verbal instructions; read and understand prints and plans; communicate effectively, verbally and in
writing: ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees,
the public and supervisors.
Special Qualifications:
- Must possess a valid "Class B" New Mexico Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker
endorsements or be able to obtain one in 6 months. Testing will be performed to verify skills.
After completion of CDL licensing, pay may be increased.
- Must be able to pass ICC physical yearly and maintain medical certificate.
- Must become flagging certified.
- Must complete OSHA and traffic control training.
- Wear PPE as required
- May be required to complete light and heavy equipment certification and maintain throughout
employment
- Must be capable of passing a pre-employment physical and drug test
- As a safety sensitive employee is subject to random drug testing
- Must be able to comply with applicable county and departmental policies and safety
standards.
- Must maintain a high level of customer service at all times
- May be required, at times, to work abnormal hours, weekends and Holidays
