District Recruitment for Vernon Parish:
The purpose of this position is to operate a variety of heavy equipment for the purposes of road/bridge construction and maintenance. This position is located in DISTRICT 08 /SECTION 540 of the Department of Transportation and Development. The incumbent must be self-motivated and be able to perform duties with minimal supervision and able to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise.

Job Duties and Other Information
Job Duties:
50% Operates the following heavy equipment, as needed:
- Asphalt Distributor (truck mounted) Lowboys
- Backhoes Milling machines (
- Front end loaders Road planer
- Bucket/ladder trucks Road widener (
- Cranes/draglines (lifting capacity >20,000 Sewer Cleaners (truck mounted)

40% Operates skid steers, rollers, jet dispatcher, 72- hp tractors with 15 ft. bat wing mowers, and tractor mounted slope mower. Installs and maintains temporary traffic control devices and serves as a flag person during traffic control operations. Uses a variety of hand tools such as shovels, rakes, jackhammer, demolition saw, chain saw, string trimmer, and pole saw. Performs manual task such as pothole patching, manual cutting of brush and grass, ditch digging, cleaning buildings, assisting in mud jack operations, cutting trees, collecting litter, cleaning & repairing of Asphaltic Concrete and Portland Cement Concrete Pavements as well as bridge decks, and other manual tasks as needed to accomplish the department's mission.
5% Performs minor repairs, services, preventative maintenance, and cleans equipment in accordance with operator's manual and manufacture's recommendations to keep equipment operating efficiently and safely.
5% May be required to perform other duties as necessary, including, but not limited to, emergency/disaster support activities.
Position-Specific Details:
The incumbent is required to possess to following specialized knowledge, skills, abilities:
- Maintain a Class A CDL license and meet all structured training requirements for this position.
- Requires random drug testing.
- Required to stand, sit, squat, walk, bend, and climb on and off equipment and trailer, as well as lifting up to fifty pounds on a daily basis.
- Required to work in all types of inclement weather and conditions.
- Perform manual labor work tasks, to occasionally perform the duties of a Parish Highway Maintenance Superintendent in his absence.
Appointment Type: Probational, Promotional, or Lateral
Work Schedule: Monday-Thursday/6:30AM to 5:00PM
