The overall function of this position is to serve as a lead worker over lower-level engineering technicians engaged in construction inspection work. This position is located in District 58, Unit 201 in the Project Engineer's office and reports directly to the Engineering Technician 7.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a high school diploma or GED plus three years of sub-professional engineering experience.

SUBSTITUTIONS:

Six months of experience in sub-professional engineering, heavy mobile equipment operation, or mobile equipment maintenance will substitute for the high school diploma or GED.

College training will substitute for the required experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of experience provided that six semester hours of each thirty are in one of these specialized fields: architecture, cartography, chemistry, construction management, construction technology, drafting, engineering, engineering graphics, engineering technology, geography, geology, industrial technology, landscape architecture, math, or physics. All specialized course work credited must be in the same specialized field. A combination of course work from different fields will not be accepted.

Full-time training in sub-professional engineering from a trade school or technical institute will substitute for the required experience on a month-for-month basis for a maximum of one year of experience.

Completion of a two year course of study in a sub-professional engineering curriculum from a trade school or technical institute will substitute for two years of the required experience.

A baccalaureate degree in engineering, engineering technology, construction management or construction technology will substitute for all of the required experience.

Possession of an engineer intern certificate will substitute for all of the required experience.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

The incumbent will assist and coordinate with the ET-7 as the lead worker over a team of employees engaged in the inspections of construction projects assigned by the ET-7 or by the Project Engineer. The incumbent will perform duties of a lead worker by leading inspectors in inspection activities in verifying quality and quantity of materials as well as the methodology employed by the contractors to place and remove materials. The incumbent will provide inspection team and contractors with project information as required. As a lead worker, the incumbent will be engaged in monitoring the work of contracted personnel for compliance with plans and specifications.

As a lead worker, the incumbent will review, check and recommend changes of computations and figures developed by engineering technicians to ensure accuracy prior to submittal. The incumbent will monitor the developments of reports to ensure accuracy and completion in a timely manner.

The incumbent will review construction documents prior to construction for accuracy. This includes, but not limited to checking and computing earthwork quantities, computation sheets, cross sections, related field books, haul diagrams, and other data to ensure compliance with established and mandated Department policy and procedures.

As a lead worker, the incumbent will work closely with ET-7 in developing and prioritizing training needs of lower level technicians. This includes training and providing professional guidance in a mentor capacity. The incumbent will also monitor the performance of technicians and will provide feedback to the ET-7 to be used in the development of the PPR process.

May be required to perform other duties as necessary including, but not limited to, emergency/disaster support activities. May be subpoenaed as requested by DOTD legal Counsel. While in official capacity, DOTD employees must comply with applicable Louisiana and Civil Service laws, rules, and regulations, as well as DOTD policies, procedures, manuals, and directives.

Career Progression: This position does not participate in a CPG and will be filled as an Engineering Technician 5.

Compensation: Ranges from $21.00/hr - $37.80/hr, with $1.00/hr premium pay for hours actually worked.
