Job Summary

WXY is seeking a full-time Senior Urban Designer to join our team. This role requires an ability to manage a full range of urban design, land use, landscape, and master planning portfolios. The candidate should have strong project management skills, demonstrate experience of successfully working within project budgets and with various project teams, and possess strong design skills, passion for innovative design and systems thinking about mobility and public realm challenges, excellent visual and written communication skills, and a strong technical aptitude for learning new tools and techniques.

The position will require the ability to take on aspects of a project independently and balance production tasks with coordination responsibilities. This position will be an integral part of WXY's design team and require close collaboration with the entire design team, office principals, consultants, and clients. The selected candidate will be expected to work both independently and as part of an effective team. The position is based in New York City and is not remote.

Responsibilities:

Urban Design:

Lead master planning, urban design, and landscape projects with strong graphic, drawing, and 3D visualization capabilities

Work with cities and communities to develop conceptual master plans and public realm strategies

Conduct site analyses, zoning and massing studies, and support development of conceptual designs, project scenarios, and proposals

Project Management:

Oversee a diverse portfolio of urban design projects, managing client relationships, schedules, budgets, deliverables, and quality of visual and technical outputs

Establish project strategy and coordinate production workflows aligned with office standards and procedures

Supervise design and technical delivery by project teams, ensuring integration across disciplines

Coordinate with subconsultants, public agencies, and stakeholders to ensure comprehensive and timely project execution

Provide regular project updates and reporting to senior leadership, including Principals and Associate Principals

Ensure timely completion of design deliverables across all managed projects

Contribute to special initiatives such as business development, marketing efforts, and internal office projects

Required Skills:

Deep knowledge of contemporary and historical trends in urban design and planning, with familiarity in emerging technologies, placemaking, landscape, and development practices

Strong understanding of urban systems and development dynamics, including zoning, city planning processes, streetscape and transportation design, and green infrastructure

Demonstrated leadership and team management skills, with an interest in project budgeting and commercial strategy

Proven ability to lead complex, multidisciplinary projects involving engineering, planning, and landscape architecture

Proficiency in Rhino, Enscape, AutoCAD, and Adobe Creative Suite; strong technical aptitude with a willingness to learn new digital tools

Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities

Skilled in synthesizing complex ideas into clear, compelling design narratives and visual presentations

Flexible, collaborative, and committed to design excellence and innovation

Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills

Ability to perform well under pressure and consistently meet deadlines

Experience & Qualifications:

Able to work in the USA and begin work immediately

Excellent English verbal and written communication skills, particularly when engaging with clients, consultants, and city agency representatives.

5-10 years urban design, architecture and/or city planning experience with direct experience in management and support of urban design/planning projects

Master's Degree in Urban Design, Landscape Architecture, City Planning (with a focus on physical planning), or Architecture with a focus on urban scale projects, public realm design, and master planning.
