Position Summary: The Engineering Technician - Controls plays a key role in supporting the functionality, reliability, and compliance of manufacturing operations. This position is responsible for ensuring all equipment, systems, and processes meet defined quality, safety, and performance standards in alignment with cGMP, OSHA regulations, and company Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Reporting to Engineering Management, this role provides hands-on support across the manufacturing floor. The technician assists with technical troubleshooting, documentation, and execution of qualification protocols under the guidance of engineering staff. Responsibilities include drafting and updating technical documents such as SOPs, Preventive Maintenance (PM) procedures, and Work Instructions (WIs), as well as providing general support to engineers on various projects.
This is a non-exempt, hourly position.
This role will start on 1st shift and will transition to either 2nd or 3rd shift.
2nd Shift: 3:00pm-11:30pm
3rd Shift: 11:00pm-7:30am
Responsibilities
Provide hands-on technical support to the manufacturing floor across electrical controls, mechanical systems, and process improvements.
Troubleshoot and maintain a wide range of control components, including sensors, relays, switches, valves, solenoids, and control circuit elements.
Support and maintain high-voltage panels with adherence to safety protocols and troubleshooting best practices.
Interface with PLCs, HMIs, and VFDs from multiple manufacturers (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Mitsubishi, Omron, Panasonic, Schneider); ability to learn new software platforms as needed.
Understand relay logic and ladder logic
Troubleshoot and edit PLC programs, HMI screens, and VFD configurations
Support system commissioning and resolve control-related startup issues
Apply knowledge of PNP vs. NPN sensor configurations and troubleshooting techniques.
Assist in commissioning new manufacturing suites and resolving electrical/controls issues during startup.
Build and install control cabinets per design specifications.
Document and share technical knowledge through concise "how-to" guides for downtime resolutions.
Collaborate cross-functionally with Engineering, Production, and Quality to troubleshoot and resolve root causes of equipment issues.
Identify equipment capability gaps and recommend improvements or alternatives.
Maintain compliance with SOPs, cGMP standards, and safety procedures within the production and process development areas.
Manage multiple projects and meet deadlines as assigned by Engineering leadership.
Maintain a strong working knowledge of Thorne manufacturing equipment and processes.
Communicate effectively across departments and demonstrate professionalism and respect in all interactions.
Support overtime needs and workload shifts as required.
What You Need
- High school diploma (or general education degree-GED) required and relevant college coursework required. Associates degree preferred.
- A minimum of three years' experience within a regulated environment (FDA, ISO and/or cGMP) standards required. An AA/AS or BS in an applicable field can substitute for experience.
- Experience working in skilled trade, Manufacturing Maintenance or Manufacturing Engineering Preferred.
