The UX / HMI Architect will lead the development and implementation of operator systems and component strategies across global New Technology Introduction (NTI) programs. This role is responsible for designing industry-leading cab workspace layouts that enhance the User Experience (UX) for machine operators. The Architect will coordinate concept design reviews, align with cross-functional teams: Global Construction & Infrastructure Division (GCI), Caterpillar Industrial Design (CID), Integrated Components & Solutions Division (ICS), and provide technical leadership throughout the full product lifecycle (NTI/NPI/CPI). This position is a core member of the Earthmoving (EMD) Cab Core Leadership Team, leads the EMD UX Council Team, and serves as the primary point of contact for the Earthmoving UX project portfolio.

What You Will Do:

  • Drive the development and execution of operator systems and component strategies.
  • Lead Human-Machine Interface (HMI) component development across the full product lifecycle (NTI/NPI/CPI).
  • Align cab components, cab systems, and machine UX Multi-Generational Product Planning.
  • Define high-level requirements for next-generation operator systems.
  • Manage implementation plans and budget alignment for UX/HMI programs.
  • Design cab workspace layouts that deliver best-in-class operator UX.
  • Gather and analyze Voice of Customer (VOC) insights in collaboration with GCI and direct customers.
  • Benchmark competitive products and assess UX positioning.
  • Facilitate the Earthmoving UX Council Team and promote consistency across business units.
  • Plan and coordinate NTI program concept design reviews and stakeholder (TRL) reviews.
  • Lead rapid concept evaluations and value trade-off discussions.
  • Collaborate with business units to support a comprehensive product strategy.
  • Provide technical leadership for cab system initiatives and maintain the Cab Book of Knowledge.
  • Mentor and develop UX/HMI personnel.

What You Have (Basic Qualifications):

  • Degree requirement: Bachelors degree in Engineering
  • Human-Centered Design:
    • Demonstrated leadership in UX methodologies such as Design Thinking, Empathic Design, Personas, and Journey Mapping.
    • Strong understanding of operator applications, needs, and preferences, ensuring user-centric solutions in complex machine environments.
  • User Experience Design:
    • Experience in developing user requirements and managing trade-offs (e.g., display, HMI, climate, visibility).
    • Proven ability to design intuitive and effective cab workspace layouts that enhance operator performance and satisfaction.
  • Decision Making and Critical Thinking:
    • Proven organizational and project management skills, with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
    • Experience working in cross-functional and cross-organizational teams, including engagement with Chief Engineers and Product Managers.
  • Creativity:
    • Self-starter with a strong sense of initiative and a player/coach mentality, driving innovation in UX/HMI solutions.
    • Excellent interpersonal communication, conflict resolution, and leadership skills, with deep expertise in a technical role.

Additional Info :

  • Office Model: This position requires the employee to work a 5-day-a-week schedule in the office.
  • Travel: 5-10% domestic and international travel is expected.
  • Relocation: Domestic relocation will be available to those who qualify.
  • ISE: ISE assignments are not available.

Summary Pay Range:

$126,000.00 - $204,720.00

Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
