Position Overview

Shaw Industries is seeking a CAD Designer to join our Enterprise Utilities Team. This team provides engineering support for the corporations manufacturing, distribution, sales, and administrative facilities. Although its primary base is in Dalton, GA, The Enterprise Utilities Team is deployed on projects across the enterprise. The department provides feasibility studies, high-level budgets, project development, detailed cost estimates, engineering, design, project management, consulting, and CAD services. The Enterprise Utilities Team has specialists to serve the needs of each segment of the business. Staff includes mechanical, electrical, & civil engineers, project managers, interior designers, and CAD designers, as well as administrative staff.

The CAD Designer will function as a CAD professional using AutoCAD, Inventor, and other advanced tools including 3D Point Cloud Laser Scanners to create detailed drawings and models for various projects in support of the Enterprise Utilities Team. Collaborate with engineers, architects, and other professionals to translate conceptual ideas into precise technical drawings, 3D models, and prototypes, ensuring designs meet technical, functional, and aesthetic requirements.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare basic 2D and 3D drawings, models, and schematics under supervision, taking an active role in the design process by collaborating with engineers or architects to create more complex designs.
  • Support senior designers and engineers by drafting simple design concepts or edits to existing plans, while developing detailed drawings and models for manufacturing, construction, or other project needs.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including engineers and architects, to ensure design feasibility and practicality, while participating in design reviews to suggest improvements based on technical knowledge.
  • Ensure all designs and drafts are of high quality, error-free, and compliant with company standards, engineering specifications, and regulatory requirements.
  • Continuously work on improving the efficiency of the design process, enhancing CAD standards, and introducing new tools and software.
  • Provide primary ownership of drawing data management software (currently Autodesk Vault) to maintain drawing integrity, track changes, and manage revisions. -
  • Mentor other designers through training sessions and by creating best practice guidelines.
  • Address complex design issues with innovative solutions and adjustments, while collecting detailed site information using various data collection tools, including manual measuring tools and 3D point-cloud laser scanners.
  • Interact with clients, suppliers, and team members to clarify design requirements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in CAD design, engineering, or a related field with 1 year of relevant industrial or engineering CAD design experience, OR 3 years of equivalent experience outside of Corporate Engineering / Shaw.
  • Strong independent design capabilities and proficiency in CAD design, with solid problem-solving skills to address and resolve complex design challenges.
  • Ability to manage projects of moderate to high complexity, demonstrated leadership, and collaboration experience across cross-functional teams.
  • Capacity to mentor and support the development of junior CAD designers.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, willingness to work project-related overtime, including periodic after-hours support, and availability to travel domestically (approximately 30%) and internationally as needed (infrequently).

Location:

This position will be primarily based in Dalton, GA, with project management assignments and responsibilities potentially requiring work at any Shaw facility location.
