POSITION SUMMARY

The Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of heavy and light construction equipment - including excavators, bulldozers, loaders, and forklifts - to support earthwork, material handling and site preparation activities. This role ensures machinery is maintained in good working order, site hazards are identified and mitigated, and project objectives are met on schedule and within budget.

Requirements

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Safely operate assigned machinery (e.g., excavators, backhoes, dozers, loaders, skid-steers, forklifts) in accordance with manufacturer guidelines and site requirements.
  • Perform daily inspections of equipment (fluids, hydraulics, safety devices, undercarriage, tires/tracks), document findings, and report any defects or maintenance needs.
  • Carry out basic maintenance tasks (lubrication, filter changes, battery checks) and coordinate with maintenance teams for repairs beyond operator scope.
  • Assist with grading, trenching, backfilling, stockpiling, and site cleanup to maintain safe, organized work areas.
  • Use equipment to load, unload, and stockpile materials (aggregate, pipe, steel) in compliance with load-securement and weight-distribution standards.
  • Work closely with spotters, laborers, surveyors, and supervisors to ensure proper positioning, alignment, and sequencing of operations.
  • Adhere to all company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and site-specific procedures; participate in toolbox talks, hazard assessments, and incident investigations as needed.
  • Maintain accurate equipment logs (hours, fuel usage, maintenance performed), complete timecards, and submit daily activity reports.
  • Provide feedback on equipment performance, suggest efficiency improvements, and participate in training on new equipment and technologies.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

COMPETENCIES

  • Strong understanding of hydraulic, mechanical, and safety systems on a variety of equipment.
  • Vigilant identification of ground conditions, overhead hazards, and personnel proximity to prevent accidents.
  • Precise control of equipment levers, pedals, and joysticks for accurate grading, digging, and material placement.
  • Ability to troubleshoot equipment issues in the field and implement basic corrective measures.
  • Clear, concise interaction with crew members, supervisors, and spotters using radios and hand signals.
  • Plan work sequence to maximize productivity while accommodating shift changes, weather delays, and project milestones.
  • Proactive in hazard recognition, risk mitigation, and enforcement of safety protocols.
  • Collaborate effectively with diverse crews under varying site conditions.
  • Flexibility to operate multiple equipment types and adjust to changing project requirements.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or GED required; technical or vocational training in heavy equipment operations preferred.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years' experience operating heavy construction equipment in commercial, industrial, or civil construction settings.
  • Proven track record of safe operation and minimal downtime due to equipment incidents.
  • Valid Class A or B driver's license with clean driving record.
  • Equipment-specific certification(s) (e.g., NCCER, OSHA 10-hour, forklift operator) required or willingness to obtain upon hire.
