DESCRIPTION
This position is considered a Safety-Sensitive position. Applicants who pass the interview process will be subject to drug and alcohol testing.
The purpose of this position is to provide technical and manual operation of construction vehicles and heavy equipment within the Department.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Essential Functions:
- Must be able to communicate with others in spoken and written English to ensure the safe and efficient operations of the business.
- Maintains and services track hoe, paving machine, roller, and backhoe for proper and safe use.
- Operates heavy equipment in a safe and efficient manner to facilitate daily work activities.
- Maintains a safe work environment for co-workers and pedestrians in or near work zone while excavating, moving trench boxes and back filling ditches.
- Gathers necessary tools and parts and transfers to the designated job site for the completion of the assigned project.
- Assists work crews in the completion of designated tasks ranging from fire hydrant installation, paving, pouring concrete.
- Restores public streets, sidewalks, drainage systems and curbs to their previous state for public use after work activities.
- Restores yards, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, mailboxes and any other private property affected by excavation to their original condition.
- Arranges the pickup and delivery of heavy equipment to future job sites.
- Sets up safety equipment within work zone including trench boxes, signs, cones, and barricades.
- Executes duties during off hours, holidays and weekends in the event of emergencies and or natural disasters.
- Operates winch truck, paving machine, roller and other equipment necessary to finish assigned tasks.
- Responsible for snow and ice removal, salts roads and walkways as needed.
- Respond to natural disasters.
- Participates in on-call and standby duties, which involves working alone or with co-workers at night, weekends, and holidays to resolve situations that occur after normal business hours.
- Performs other work as assigned.

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
- Requires High School diploma or GED equivalent; may be waived by work experience.
- Must have two (2) years of experience as a heavy equipment operator or closely related.
Special Certifications and Licenses:
- Must have a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
