Location: This is a hybrid (virtual/onsite) position with required onsite days on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and may be assigned to any Consumers Energy Service Center located throughout Michigan's lower Peninsula. The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those that qualify).
General Summary of Job Responsibilities The Electric Engineer is responsible for engineering and design to support the sustainable operation of our distribution system. The incumbent works with teams across the organization and external stakeholders, and develops technical projects as required.
This position will be required to hold a storm role, which will require on-call for emergency response.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
This position will be responsible for deploying new technology onto the electric grid by leading and supporting multiple projects focused on increasing automation and improving reliability
Collaborate with customers, coworkers, and others to discuss existing or potential engineering products or projects
Perform a wide range of engineering tasks by operating computer-assisted design or engineering software and equipment
Ensure that installation and operations conform to standards and customer requirements by preparing electrical systems specifications, technical drawings, or topographical maps
Ensure compliance with specifications, codes, or customer requirements by directing or coordinating installation, manufacturing, construction, maintenance, documentation, support, or testing activities
Write reports and compile data regarding existing and potential electrical engineering projects and studies
Prepare specifications for purchases of electrical equipment and materials and estimating material, labor, or construction costs for budget preparation
Design, control, and implement electrical systems and products
Design, maintain, implement, or improve electrical instruments, facilities, components, equipment products, or systems for industrial, commercial, or domestic purposes
Establish construction, manufacturing, or installation standards or specifications by performing a wide range of detailed calculations
Other duties as assigned or may be necessary
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Written and verbal communication skills
Organizational skills and attention to detail
Working knowledge of electric utility operation (i.e. generation, transmission and distribution of three phase alternating current power)
Knowledge of applicable codes related to electronic engineering
Proficient in design and calculation software
Analytical and problem-solving skills
Knowledge of the theory and practice of electric utility distribution planning, construction, operation, and maintenance
Knowledge of distribution planning principles is an asset
Education/Experience
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program with two (2) or more years of electrical engineering experience
[OR] Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from a non-ABET accredited program plus a Professional Engineering license with two (2) or more years of electrical engineering experience
