JOB SUMMARY
Under general supervision, to perform journey level layout, welding, fabrication, installation and repair of piping, equipment, and structural steel in various types of power plants, substations, and irrigation systems. Design, fabricate and maintain components of vehicles and equipment.
DUTIES AND RESPONIBILITIES
Fabricate electrical substation structures from engineering designs, drawings and blueprints in accordance with engineering code and specifications. Repair hydroelectric turbine runners. Perform pipefitting work. Fabricate, repair and install gates and structures for irrigation systems. Design, fabricate, repair, sharpen and temper tools or specialty items not available through outside sources. Layout, design and fabricate work projects utilizing steel and sheet metal.
Use acetylene and electrical welding equipment in the heating, welding and cutting of metals in accordance with standard trade practices.
Set-up, regulate, and make minor repair on welding equipment.
Inspect, maintain and repair mechanical equipment as required.
May requisition needed supplies and materials. Maintain work, time, and material records.
Make preliminary material lists and labor estimates.
Perform other related duties as required or assigned by supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
Experience
Five years of journey level welding experience.
Skills and Abilities
Interpersonal and Communication. Ability to: understand and carry out oral and written instructions; and establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Technical and Analytical. Knowledge of: equipment, materials, and techniques employed in the welding trade, such as mig, tig, arc welding, oxyacetylene welding and cutting, plasma cutting, hardfacing, brazing and soldering; fabrication, maintenance, and repair of light and heavy steel structures, equipment and tools; rigging principles, gantry crane safety and practices used in handling heavy object; occupational hazards of the trade and appropriate precautionary measures; and properties of various metals in relation to welding processes, such as their reaction to heat, fusing qualities, and the proper temperature for welding or cutting; and welding rods and wire applications. Ability to: maintain and make minor repairs to tools and welding equipment; make preliminary material lists and labor estimates; and read blueprints and perform journey layout and design work. Operations of: hydraulic boom trucks and overhead crane.
Administration and Operations. Must maintain work, time, and material records. Must have good organizational and time management skills. Ability to: work independently with minimal supervision, and handle multiple projects at one time. Must maintain knowledge of current technology by way of periodicals, contact with industry representatives and job-related training.
Necessary Special Requirements Possession of an appropriate California driver's license.Possession of a certified Welding Certificate.
