Who are we looking for?

Were looking for a Senior Project Engineer - Transportation to join our growing Canadian Operations. To be successful, you must have a minimum of 10+ years of experience in transportation engineering, design and design coordination on large scale transportation projects including highways, roads, transit, and multi-modal infrastructure (LRT/BRT). The Senior Project Engineer will cooperate and work closely with other members of the multi-disciplinary team, regional team leads across Ontario, Canada, North America and GHDs global network.

Working with an energetic and high performing team, this position offers a variety of work and will see you involved in:

  • Leading and developing transportation engineering design for roadway, highway and freeway projects, and/or multi-modal corridors including median LRT/BRT
  • Coordinating the preparation of civil deliverables, drawings and details from conception to final design in a 3D modelling environment such as Civil 3D, according to established standards and procedures for a wide variety of projects.
  • Being able to lead a small team of engineers and/or designers to drive design phases and implement design standards on transportation infrastructure projects of high complexity.
  • Mentoring and supervising junior and developing EITs and Technicians, fostering a team approach
  • Reviewing and overseeing the preparation of models and drawings and working together with other Engineers and Designers to develop detailed drawings, quantities and various supporting documents including technical memos, specifications, contract documents etc. completing assignments with minimal guidance
  • Collaborating with other engineering disciplines and design staff in the production of high-quality project deliverables
  • Communicating with other discipline leads, designers, and project team members on a regular basis to ensure effective and timely flow of project information to meet scheduled deadlines. Ensuring that project design solutions are delivered to the highest standards and meet program and budgetary constraints
  • Maintaining contact with sub-consultants, municipalities, utility companies and clients
  • Overseeing the preparation of reports, and contract documents for review agencies, clients, and the public
  • Working in various procurement environments such as Design-Bid-Build and Design-Build projects
  • Adhering to GHD BIM and Quality standards and procedures and implementing compliance on project level
  • Participating, when required, in advancement of GHD Standard Civil/Transportation Details including the promotion of changes and updates to tools and methods, assisting with training development and lessons learned exercises.
  • Various opportunities for career development in either a design lead, design management, or project management role as well as potential future opportunities for direct supervision of staff

Responsibilities

  • Engineering Solutions Design: Design engineering solutions and the associated validation process to enable the realization of a design brief (for example, in terms of functionality, performance, aesthetics, and cost) that conforms to organizational and/or regulatory standards.
  • Engineering Standards Specification: Contribute to the analysis of information, the drafting of engineering standards and specifications, and the evaluation of the effectiveness of those standards within own engineering discipline to inform engineering work in the organization and/or of its suppliers, contractors, and consultants.
  • Project Management: Deliver small- or medium-scale projects while working within an established program management plan.
  • Process Design Engineering: Analyze information and specify the methods and process steps, as well as the plant, machinery, and equipment, required to design and continuously improve manufacturing or materials processes and process systems to deliver the end product within specified cost and quality parameters.
  • Contract Management: Deliver required outcomes by managing day-to-day relationships with contract service providers while working within an established contract management plan.
  • Product and Solution Development: Define and deliver products and services that meet customer needs by selecting the best possible approaches available within established systems.
  • Knowledge Management System: Work within established knowledge management systems to deliver preset outcomes for an area of responsibility.
  • Personal Capability Building: Develop own capabilities by participating in assessment and development planning activities as well as formal and informal training and coaching; gain or maintain external professional accreditation, where relevant, to improve performance and fulfill personal potential. Maintain an in-depth understanding of technology, external regulation, and industry best practices through ongoing education, attending conferences, and reading specialist media.
  • Engineering Inspections: Carry out inspections to evaluate the quality of engineering works and/or the integrity of existing installations or structures, and specify the remedial works needed to ensure conformance with specifications and regulatory requirements.
  • Improvement/Innovation: Identify shortcomings in existing processes, systems, and procedures, and use established change management programs to address them.
  • Client & Customer Management (External): Manage relationships with small clients while also helping senior colleagues manage relationships with larger key clients and customers.

What you will bring to the team:

  • Post-secondary degree in Civil Engineering
  • 10+ years experience in design and engineering of transportation infrastructure projects
  • Ontario P.Eng designation required (or eligible) (Mandatory)
  • Positive attitude, good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Proven record of successful delivery of Transportation Engineering projects
  • Strong familiarity with road and highway design philosophies and geometric design principles (i.e. TAC Geometric Guidelines), Ontario design standards (i.e. OPSS), roadside safety design, and client specific standards and requirements (eg. MTO)
  • Experience with 3D modelling of corridors using software such as Civil 3D or OpenRoads/InRoads (Preferred)
  • Proficiency with design software such as AutoCAD Civil 3D and/or Microstation
  • Superior attention to detail, problem solving and organizational skills.
  • Performs complex design tasks on projects with understanding of multidisciplinary environment by collaborating with team members from other disciplines for necessary inputs
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team environment
  • Good understanding of level of effort required to complete the work to assist with project resourcing/timelines
  • Competency/expertise in BIM Collaboration tools e.g. (ProjectWise, BIM 360, Autodesk Construction Cloud) (Preferred but not required).
  • Strong communication skills for team-based working environment.
  • Ability to work in multiple parallel projects and within a team environment.
  • Ability to work under and meet tight deadlines
