The purpose of this position is to operate a variety of heavy equipment for the purposes of road/bridge construction and maintenance primarily for Calcasieu Parish. This position is located in District 07 Unit 710 of the Department of Transportation and Development and reports directly to Highway Foreman 2. The incumbent must be self-motivated and be able to perform duties with minimal supervision and able to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise. The incumbent will participate in appropriate DOTD structured training programs and attend all continuing education classes and conferences deemed necessary to facilitate the performance of required tasks. While in official capacity, DOTD employees must comply with applicable Louisiana and Civil Service Laws, rules, and regulations, as well as DOTD policies, procedures, manuals, and directives.

As Mobile Equipment Operator, you'll help create a positive first impression for every person who walks through our doors or see on the roadways. In this role, you will:

Operate the following heavy equipment, as needed:

  • Asphalt Distributor (truck mounted)
  • Backhoes
  • Front end loaders
  • Bucket/ladder trucks
  • Cranes/draglines (lifting capacity >20,000 lbs but <40,000 lbs
  • Dozers (<140 HP)
  • Dump truck (tandem axle or trailer dump)
  • Gradalls
  • Hot mix pavers (<40 HP)
  • Motor Grader
  • Lowboys
  • Milling machines (<90 HP)
  • Road planer
  • Road widener (<90 HP)
  • Sewer Cleaners (truck mounted)
  • Striping machines
  • Sweepers
  • Track hoes (excavators)
  • Under bridge inspection units (trailer mounted

Position-Specific Details:

Appointment Type: Probational or Promotional

Work Schedule: Work hours are 6:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday - Thursday

Career Progression: As part of a Career Progression Group, vacancies may be filled from this recruitment as a Mobile Equipment Operator 1, 2 or 1/Heavy depending on the level of experience of the selected applicant(s).

Compensation: Salary depends on qualifications.

MOBILE EQUIPMENT OPERATOR 1:
Class D, Chauffeurs License will be required upon appointment. Starting salary for MEO-1 is $16.06/hourly; this job title receives Premium Pay in the amount of $1.00/hour for all hours worked. Additionally, a 10% base pay increase will be granted upon attainment of permanent status.

MOBILE EQUIPMENT OPERATOR 2:
Class A, Commercial Drivers License (CDL) will be required upon appointment. Starting salary for MEO-2 is $17.18/hourly; this job title receives Premium Pay in the amount of $1.00/hour for all hours worked. Additionally, a 10% base pay increase will be granted upon attainment of permanent status.

MOBILE EQUIPMENT OPERATOR 1/HEAVY:
Class A, Commercial Drivers License (CDL) will be required upon appointment. Starting salary for MEO-1/HEAVY is $21.05/hourly.
