Position: Superintendent
Report to: General Superintendent
Job Description Overview
The superintendent position is responsible for on-site management of a project or several projects in a similar geographic area. The superintendent shall provide jobsite leadership to a crew, or multiple crews, assigned to a project by managing the foreman and/or crew leader. Superintendents are responsible for coordinating multiple crews' operations to meet or exceed production goals and are expected to work closely with the project managers and general superintendents. Superintendents are responsible for conducting hiring interviews and providing hiring recommendations. They will receive an iPad/laptop and a cell phone and be assigned a company truck.
Safety training by the company will be required for all team members. Out-of-town work is probable and may require travel of up to three weeks away from home at a time. Dependable attendance and punctuality are critical.
Responsibilities
Ensures adherence to all safety procedures and promotes Kwest Group's zero-harm safety culture.
Leads by example and ensures crews complete SLAM books, Task Hazard Analysis forms, daily safety briefings, and pre-task stretching.
Provides daily leadership to Foremen, Crew Leaders, and field team members; mentors and instructs on best practices in civil construction.
Oversees and coordinates subcontractor activities to ensure alignment with project schedule, safety standards, and quality expectations; resolves issues and maintains workflow continuity.
Develops, coordinates, and executes future tasks for multiple crews to ensure timely project completion.
Directs and supervises all phases of construction including
Site layout and elevation control
Earthwork, grading, and mass excavation
Installation of underground utilities (storm, water, sewer)
Forming, pouring, and finishing horizontal and vertical concrete structures
Sets up and uses GPS, ATS, UTS, and machine control systems for layout and earthwork, trains others in their proper use.
Ensures assigned crews conduct and document daily equipment inspections.
Tracks and analyzes productivity, crew and equipment hours, and unit costs through HCSS Heavy Job; adjusts field operations as needed.
Interprets and implements project plans and specifications, including DOT and sector-specific standards.
Coordinates ordering and delivery of materials and supplies.
Drives, cleans, and maintains the company truck; ensures it is stocked with commonly used items.
Travels to job sites as needed to support ongoing work.
Provides recommendations regarding team member promotions, terminations, and disciplinary actions to support sound workforce management.
Education and Qualifications
- High school diploma, GED, or trade school certificate preferred.
- 10-15+ years of civil construction experience, including supervisory or leadership roles.
- Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following sectors: Industrial, Energy, Federal/Public, or Rail. Superintendents are typically assigned to a primary market sector.
- Valid Class B CDL required; Class A preferred for Rail sector projects.
- Clean driving record.
- Proficiency with GPS layout tools, ATS/UTS, and machine control systems required.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications, including DOT formats (e.g., NCDOT/SCDOT).
- Familiarity with construction site safety regulations, truck maintenance, and road safety.
- Must pass pre-employment and random drug screenings.
- Required to complete OSHA 30-hour certification and First Aid/CPR before starting work.
- Willing and able to travel for out-of-town and out-of-state projects, potentially for extended durations.
- Must be flexible to work evenings and weekends as required by project needs.
- Expected workweek is typically 45-55 hours over 5 ten-hour days.
Selection Process
Team members will be considered eligible for a superintendent position upon exemplary completion of a period as a foreman. The need for superintendent positions will be determined by the director of field operations and the general superintendents based on forecasted project demands. Superintendent positions will be advertised to internal and/or external candidates and selected by the general superintendents and director of field operations and approved by the president of Kwest Group.
Working Conditions & Physical Demands
- Travel from site to site will be required.
- Work environment will normally be an active construction site. Exposure to dust, noise, high heat, extreme cold, and rain should be expected.
- Employee must be physically able to perform repetitive motion and heavy lifting, as described below.
- Must be able to maintain effective audio and visual discrimination and paerception to the degree necessary for the successful performance of assigned duties.
- Must wear all employer-mandated personal protective equipment, including hard hat, safety glasses, ear plugs, safety vests, and safety-toed work boots. Other PPE may be required from time to time depending on special safety concerns. All PPE will be provided by the company at no cost to the employee, other than safety boots.
- Must be able to hear with or without the use of a hearing device and clearly see at least 30 feet with or without the use of corrective vision lens.
- Must be able work while wearing a respirator if necessary.
- Alternate standing and walking on uneven terrain surfaces, such as hillsides, muddy and icy soils, and other working surfaces. Safe negotiation of all types of surface conditions will always be required.
- Bending, squatting, and kneeling will be required frequently during a workday.
- Constant pushing and pulling of certain tools and materials will be required over a day's work.
- The team member must be able to differentiate and / or identify colors.
- Must have knowledge of occupational hazards in this field and standard safety practices. Must be able to pass the 30 Hour OSHA testing and First Aid/CPR requirements before starting work.
- Must complete and meet requirements under the physical demands of this job description through a pre-employment physical examination.
