Job Duties

Virginia Military Institute is accepting applications for a full-time Boiler Operator to join our team.

Job Duties:

  • Perform tasks associated with the daily operation and maintenance of boilers, steam piping, and condensate systems. Examples include testing water chemistry, and boiler safety systems, along with equipment troubleshooting, repair and replacement.
  • Complete daily logs and checklists. Clean and maintain boilers and the surrounding Plant, along with all associated equipment. Make pipetting repairs as necessary.
  • Service a variety of heating equipment and controls, including associated steam lines and components (tanks, valves, traps, pumps, motors, etc.). Perform periodic inspection of all steam and condensate equipment and mechanical room

controls. Help identify problem areas through preventative maintenance.

  • Routinely use hand tools, power tools and measuring devices in order to complete tasks.
  • Provide timely turn in of work orders with proper man-hours and materials for accurate accountability.
  • Adhere to Physical Plant safety directives, OSHA standards, Safety Data Sheet (SDS), Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) policies, Lock-out Tag-out policies, State / local laws and other governing directives.
  • Adheres to Physical Plant policies governing the conduct, wearing of the uniform, leave, proper operation of vehicles, etc. in order to make the Heat Plant a safe and professional place to work
  • Must be willing and able to perform after-hours work, to include weekends, to support the standby call process, special events, emergencies, and weather related issues.
  • Possess the ability and demeanor to work internal and external to Physical Plant.
  • Maintain high personal standards for conduct and appearance.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Good communication, written, and oral skills
  • Problem solving skills and Adaptability
  • Valid Virginia driver's license with clean driving record required
  • Possess Third Class or higher Facility Operating Engineer license or Third Class or higher Power Plant Operating Engineer license or be able to obtain certication within one year of hire.

Additional Considerations

  • Extensive experience boilers, steams systems, or combustions systems
  • Trades License and/or certications
  • High School Graduate or GED.
