Job Description:

Fulfills the mission of Norwich University by performing basic carpentry services to build, repair, rebuild, remodel and maintain campus buildings, facilities, and equipment. Also assists in providing general maintenance in support of other trades/department as assigned.

Essential Functions

Is dedicated to creating and maintaining a safe work environment for all members of the Norwich community.

Receives work assignments, plans and lays out work.

Procures materials, tools and equipment.

Maintains records of completed work.

Repairs broken windows and screens, installs screens, and new window units, etc.

Performs routine maintenance of household and office equipment/accessories, i.e. toilet paper holders, shower curtains, window shades and blinds.

Repairs and installs doors, flooring, ceilings, walls and windows.

Builds and/or remodels various units such as kitchens, offices, etc.

Erects and dismantles various campus structures for special events such as hockey rink, stages, commencement platform, etc.

Performs painting, taping, plastering, sanding and varnishing on interior and exterior of buildings, facilities and equipment, floors, cabinets and doors as required.

Cleans tools, equipment, and workspaces daily at the end the shift.

Uses ladders and bucket lifts to access building exteriors and lamp post banners.

Makes minor repairs on flat roof surfaces.

Performs other maintenance work as requested, including but not limited to: snow removal, event set-up and clean up, truck loading and unloading and grounds maintenance.

Performs all duties in a safe and professional manner and in accordance with the established Norwich University and department policies and procedures.

Other Functions

Maintains confidentiality of sensitive or private information.

Communicates with employees, students, and others in a respectful and clear manner.

Serves on University committees, councils, workgroups, or other designated bodies as assigned.

Achieves, maintains proficiency in, and utilizes computers, telephones, and other job-related equipment, including related systems and software.

Speaks, reads, and writes in English.

Communicates by telephone, email, letter, in person, or other means or device.

Performs other tasks as assigned by supervisor.

Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalent and carpentry/vocational training.

Previous carpentry experience.

Experience using various hand and power tools.

Knowledge of carpentry methods and basic math skills.

Valid driver's license.

Must pass a post-offer, pre-employment background check and physical exam

Able to sit, squat, reach, push, pull, and manipulate related equipment; lift 75 pounds; travel outdoors to various parts of the campus

Work some evening, weekend, or on-call hours as needed.

Environmental Conditions

Indoor work and outdoor work in all weather conditions.

High level of exposure to noise, dust, fumes, vibrations, sharp cutting implements (saws and power tools), and temperature changes.
