Were growingand were looking for a skilled Construction Project Manager to join our Building Technologies & Solutions team at Johnson Controls. Based in North Suburban Illinois, youll oversee mechanical construction projects exceeding $1M, often managing multiple initiatives at once.

In this high-impact role, youll guide complex equipment installations from strategy to execution, collaborating with sales teams, installation managers, and partners to deliver smart, profitable results. Youll drive scope development, vendor selection, value engineering, and risk assessment, ensuring every project is delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest standards of safety, ethics, and legal compliance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead execution teams and coordinate internal/external stakeholders to deliver high-value mechanical equipment projects.

  • Develop and manage detailed project schedules, budgets, and cash flow to meet profitability goals.

  • Support scope evaluation and manage client directives, change orders, and final negotiations.

  • Oversee HVAC mechanics and subcontractors, ensuring quality work and compliance with codes, contracts, and safety standards.

  • Manage materials procurement, subcontractor agreements, and project documentation.

  • Monitor project performance using financial and scheduling tools, proactively addressing risks and recovery plans.

  • Communicate progress and financial updates to leadership while resolving issues with minimal escalation.

  • Build strong relationships with customers, consultants, and partners to support long-term business growth.

  • Coordinate resource allocation, product support, and client training needs.

  • Contribute to bundled projects through early stage estimating, strategy input, and direct management.

What we look for

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in construction, Civil, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, Construction Management or Architecture or an associate's degree with equivalent work-related experience.

  • Expectation that PMI/PMP (Project Management Institute, Project Management Professional) certification will be obtained within 2 years of employment in the position.

  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.

  • Must be able to communicate technical material to a non-technical audience.

  • Travel will vary on project assignment. Projects may exist outside of assigned geography.

  • Proficient in Project Management software and financial accounting systems.

  • Strong Personal Computer working capabilities in MS Office (excel, word, power point, project), Adobe Writer, Visio and basic Windows environment.

Preferred

  • Minimum of five years of direct project management experience in the Building Construction Industry preferred.

  • Management experience with projects related to Mechanical Retrofits, HVAC controls, BAS management, Fire management, and Security management systems is desired.

  • Will consider strong service technician and pipe fitter project leads.

Hiring Compensation Range: $86,200.00 - 144,000.00 USD Annual. (Annual rate to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.)
