Starting Hourly Rate: $23.07 - $25.39 per hour (based on qualifications and experience)

Work Schedule: Full time; Monday-Friday, 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM (on-call or extended hours as needed)

McLean County is looking for a Building Maintenance Mechanic II to join our team. In this role, you'll perform a wide range of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance tasks- from servicing environmental control systems to performing carpentry, electrical, and plumbing repairs across County buildings and facilities.

This position plays a critical role in supporting County operations by ensuring our buildings and spaces are well-maintained, safe, and ready to serve our residents and employees.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform skilled HVAC service and repair tasks, including adjusting controls, replenishing refrigerants, and replacing worn or broken components.
  • Diagnose and repair building systems, including electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and mechanical components.
  • Install communication and computer wiring and related infrastructure.
  • Assist with demolition, remodeling, and equipment installations.
  • Move office furniture and materials as needed.
  • Operate County vehicles to transport supplies and complete maintenance errands.
  • Maintain records, follow safety protocols, and complete other duties as assigned.
  • Provide guidance to maintenance support staff when leading specific projects.

What You Bring to the Role

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong understanding of HVAC systems, tools, and repair techniques.
  • Skilled in electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and general building maintenance.
  • Ability to work independently and interpret technical diagrams or instructions.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and email communications.
  • Clear communicator with strong problem-solving skills.
  • Comfortable working both indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Capable of providing oversight to other maintenance personnel on projects.
  • Able to maintain confidentiality and work with sensitive information.

Physical Demands

  • Frequently lift/move up to 50 pounds; occasionally up to 100 pounds.
  • Work involves climbing, bending, stooping, pushing/pulling, and standing for long periods.
  • Requires visual and mental acuity for safety and problem-solving.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field OR an equivalent combination of education and 3-5 years of hands-on experience.
  • Experience with HVAC systems and building repair tools and techniques.
  • Valid Illinois Driver's License.
  • EPA Refrigeration Transition & Recovery Certification or HVAC trade school certification.
  • Ability to pass background and polygraph checks as required.

Work Environment

You'll primarily work indoors in County buildings and facilities, with occasional outdoor assignments in all weather conditions. You may be exposed to HVAC chemicals, biological hazards, or high-voltage systems and will be provided with appropriate safety gear and training.
