Code Compliance Inspector I - Code Enforcement CDBG

Our Development & Permits department is seeking a dynamic and motivated Code Compliance Inspector I who enjoys spending time in the field.

The successful candidate for this position will be able to do the following:

  • Become familiar with codes and ordinances enforced by division for successful completion of Phase I certification requirements for the position.
  • Excels at using computers and technical systems. With that knowledge, become familiar with the electronic record keeping system for inspections, be able to use the system workflow and ensure information contained for inspections is correct and within division procedures and policies.
  • Become familiar with the electronic permit system that contains zoning and building permits.
  • Learn about department policy on timelines for notices of violations to ensure compliance is met or requires further legal enforcement. Present cases in court with proper documentation, photos, and etiquette to ensure a successful prosecution for compliance.
  • Ability to work within the work group by fostering good communication and exchange of ideas.
  • Communicate the requirements of the codes in a clear and efficient manner.
  • Demonstrates a strong commitment to providing meaningful assistance and support to the public.
  • Exhibits keen attention to detail in reviewing and responding accurately to service requests.Ability to integrate the Department and City policies into normal day-to-day activities.
  • Earn promotions by becoming cross-trained and certified in multiple disciplines related to building and/or zoning
  • Must complete all required state training and pass certification exam(s) within 18 months of hire.

Required Qualifications

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT:

Requires high school diploma or GED and any combination of education and experience equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education in urban planning, environmental health/studies, engineering, or a closely related field.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:

In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of one year of related, full-time equivalent experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:

Requires a valid driver's license with a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards. Special skills or equipment certification may be required.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies

Preferred Qualifications

Prior work experience involving interaction with the public in a capacity of enforcement, inspections, civic group meetings, dispute resolutions, investigations, construction, and/or property preservation. Extensive experience in customer service is highly preferred
