Civil Engineer I - Public Works (Prescott)

Under general supervision, provides drafting and technical support in design and construction of County public improvement projects. Performs specialized functions related to the County's engineering projects. Work assignments are usually broad in scope and require a solid foundation of the mathematical and scientific principles used in the field of engineering.

  • Assists in professional engineering design on roads, bridges, drainage, airports and other County improvement projects.
  • Uses engineering design software including AutoCAD Civil 3D and GIS to do engineering analysis; assists in preparing construction plans and exhibits; and assists in creating engineering related specifications, reports, and studies.
  • Conducts field visits during and/or prior to design projects, to perform site measurements and to identify design needs and constrains.
  • Performs field inspections related to design projects to assure compliance with plans and specifications.
  • Works with survey and right-of-way staff as needed to support project design.
  • Works with the County's pavement management system to update and maintain its dataset.
  • Coordinates with other government, utilities and private entities as needed on specific projects involving development impacting public right-of-way and in support of other County interests.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Education:

Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or related field.

Experience:

Some professional work experiences in Civil Engineering or related field is preferred

Additional Requirements:

Must have passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and must possess an Engineer In-Training Certification within six (6) months of hire.

Must possess a valid Arizona driver's license.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Principles and practices of professional civil engineering.
  • Methods and techniques of design, construction, and maintenance of public improvement projects.
  • Construction plan and specification formatting and fundamentals.
  • Technical writing.
  • Computer-aided design software, GIS software, and common office software programs.
  • Federal, state, and county engineering, design, construction and material specification, laws, rules, regulations, codes and ordinances.
  • Business English, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and composition.
  • Clerical office practices and procedures.
  • Research techniques and report writing.
  • Current Microsoft Office software.
  • Filing and recordkeeping.

Skill in:

  • Making engineering computations, estimates, and designs with AutoCAD Civil 3D and other design software.
  • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing and communicating orally in a face-to-face setting and by telephone with public and employees.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public.
  • Organization and adherence to detail.

Ability to:

  • Schedule and organize assigned tasks to meet established deadlines.
  • Perform technical research work, analyze problems, and recommend solutions.
  • Maintain and expend CAD knowledge.
  • Maintain a professional work environment and businesslike appearance.

Work Environment:

The work environment is associated with an office and field environment year-round in all weather conditions and includes exposure to loud noise, dust, fumes, mist, and chemicals.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to sit, stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time. Sufficient vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech ability to communicate effective in-person and telephonically. Capable of frequent repetitive movement of arms, fingers, and wrists. Ability to lift up to 30 pounds.
