Building Inspector
Hiring Range: $29.31-$32.91 per hour
Full-Time, Non-Exempt
Under the direction of the Building Official, the Building Inspector is responsible for administering and assuring compliance with international residential building (IBC) codes and for performing plan reviews, maintaining and updating file records and notes on buildings as they are constructed. Duties include, but not limited to:
Conducts plan reviews prior to construction, ensuring proper materials, size, spans, loading, and bearings are calculated properly for the structural integrity of the building. Ensures that HVAC and MN energy code requirements are met. Reviews and monitors proper slope and grade from structure.
Interprets IBC codes for community members, builders, and contractors to ensure compliance and understanding of codes to minimize error and eventual costs. Conducts disaster/damage inspections for occupancy safety.
Conducts field inspections to assure that structural, set back and waste water requirements are met, conferring with additional resources and advising contractors and homeowners of corrections in the event of a non-compliance. Records inspection results, documenting non-conformances and related resolutions.
Maintains recording records and filings within the department. Addresses outdated permits, issues certificates of occupancy and reviews certification of contractor, engineer and architectural licenses.
Performs general customer services and public relation activities by responding to inquiries and questions from the public and community. Handles phone calls and emails in a timely manner.
Successful candidates for Building Inspector will have:
High School Diploma or GED
Valid drivers license
Building Official Limited Certification
AA Degree or Vocational Training with MN Building Official Cert preferred

Building Official
Hiring Range: $40.59-$51.75 per hour
Full-Time, Exempt
Under the direction of the Planning & Zoning Department Head, the Building Official is responsible for administering the operations of the inspection unit engaged in the conduct of plan reviews, field inspections and the monitoring and enforcement of international building codes, MN codes and local ordinances. Duties include, but not limited to:
Conducts and coordinates plan, blueprint and document reviews in administering the permitting process for all construction projects.
Conducts field inspections.
Coordinates the recordkeeping and filings within the department. Monitors outdated permits, coordinates and/or issues permits of occupancy and reviews certification of contractor, engineer and architectural licenses.
Performs general customer services and public relation activities by responding to inquiries and questions from the public and community. Handles phone calls and emails in a timely manner.
Successful candidates for Building Official will have:
Certification as a MN Building Official
AA Degree or Vocational Training with degree emphasis in Construction Science, Construction, Administration, Building Construction, Electrical, Architecture or related field
Minimum of 5 years construction experience and/or a combination of education/experience necessary to perform the job
Valid drivers license
Summary*We are currently seeking to add one member to our team. The expectation is the person who fills this role will become a Building Official if they dont already hold the certification necessary.
County will contribute to HSA/VEBA $1,700 for single or $3,500 for family (if you elect to pay for our Medical insurance that is provided by Medica); other benefits that are available include dental, vision, life insurance, long term disability insurance, deferred compensation plan, pension plan, employee assistance program, etc
