Starting salary is $85k - $93k depending on experience.
Up to 5% salary increase after successful completion of six-month probationary period.

Plus: Transportation Allowance up to $2000/year to be distributed equally over 26 pay periods annually.

The City of Brentwood, located in scenic Williamson County, is considered one of the most desirable suburban locations in Tennessee with a population of approximately 46,000 residents and a strong reputation for thoughtful growth, high-quality infrastructure, and excellent public services.

As the Staff Traffic Engineer, you'll serve as a key liaison between the Engineering and Public Works departments. This role offers a unique opportunity to lead traffic calming efforts, contribute to smart development, and improve safety on our roadways.

  • Serves as point of contact for neighborhood traffic calming requests, including field evaluation, data collection coordination, and recommending appropriate mitigation strategies, including communication with HOAs and property managers.
  • Reviews site plans, subdivision plats, roadway plans, and drainage studies for compliance with city code and engineering standards.
  • Tracks and organizes public petitions and permit submissions, and maintains accurate records of development review activities, permit statuses, and plan review feedback.
  • Coordinates cross-departmental and public engagement efforts by responding to inquiries, providing technical summaries, participating in policy updates, and representing the department at meetings.
  • Collaborates with internal staff, external consultants, and the Public Works Traffic Division to evaluate traffic studies, recommend improvements to transportation infrastructure, and ensure compliance with regulatory standards like the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).

The ideal candidate:

  • Has proven success of work with traffic calming implementation and report reviews.
  • Is self-motivated and able to work with a high degree of independence.
  • Is detail-oriented in tracking multiple projects, maintaining accurate records, and managing permit and plan review processes.
  • Demonstrates strong communication skills, especially when working with the public or across departments.
  • Is willing to develop themselves professionally and stay up-to-date by being open to continuous learning.
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from accredited college or universitys 4-year program.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification required within six months of hire; PE anticipated within three years.
  • 13 years of engineering experience, preferably in transportation engineering (traffic) and municipal development design or review.
  • Familiarity with traffic engineering concepts, traffic calming, MUTCD, and ITE standards.
  • Basic knowledge of site development design, review and requirements.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be physically able to operate a variety of automated office machines and tools which includes a computer, printer, facsimile machine, copy machine, calculator, telephone, drafting tools, surveyor's level, measuring wheel, tape measure, etc. Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials. Must be able to exert up to twenty pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to ten pounds of force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for sedentary work.

    DRIVERS LICENSE: Valid Tennessee Driver's License in good standing or able to obtain a Tennessee Drivers License within six months of date of hire.

    DATA CONCEPTION: Requires the ability to compare and or judge the readily observable functional, technical, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.

    INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION: Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange administrative/technical information. Includes giving assignments and/or directions to co-workers or assistants.

    LANGUAGE ABILITY: Requires the ability to read a variety of informational documentation, directions, instructions, and methods and procedures related to the job of Staff Engineer. Requires the ability to write reports with proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, using all parts of speech. Requires the ability to speak with and before others with poise, voice control, and confidence using correct English and a well-modulated voice.

    INTELLIGENCE: Requires the ability to learn and understand basic to complex principles and techniques; to make independent judgments in absence of supervision; to acquire knowledge of topics related to the job of Staff Engineer.

    VERBAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to record and deliver information to supervisors and officials; to explain procedures and policies; and to follow verbal and written instructions, guidelines and objectives.

    NUMERICAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; add and subtract totals; multiply and divide; determine percentages; determine time and weight; and utilize statistical inference.

    FORM /SPATIAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape, visually with office equipment.

    MOTOR COORDINATION: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes in using automated equipment.

    MANUAL DEXTERITY: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, office equipment, control knobs, switches, etc. Must have the ability to use one hand for twisting or turning motion while coordinating other hand with different activities. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.

    COLOR DISCRIMINATION: May require the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color.

    INTERPERSONAL TEMPERAMENT: Requires the ability to deal with people (i.e. staff, supervisors, general public, and officials) beyond giving and receiving instructions such as in interpreting departmental policies and procedures. Must be adaptable to performing under moderate stress and be able to manage several projects and/or tasks at the same time.

    PHYSICAL COMMUNICATION: Requires the ability to talk and/or hear: (talking - expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words). (Hearing - perceiving nature of sounds by ear).
