Required Qualifications: As per Civil Service Standards and Specifications. Four (4) years full time experience under a skilled journeyman Roofer, which provides training equivalent to that given in an apprenticeship program. Apprentice training in a trade or training gained by the completion of technical courses in a trade at a school or institute may be substituted for the above experience on a year-for-year basis. The Trades Generalist performs journey level work in Roofing and semi-skilled level work in Carpentry. Candidate must be able to perform the physical tasks of position such as bending, lifting up to 50 lbs, stretching and climbing. Must have the ability to work in confined spaces and from a ladder, scaffolding or man lift over ten feet in height. Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver's License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations. Preferred Qualifications: Ability to supervise and train subordinate personnel. Secondary trade is Carpentry.
Brief Description of Duties: The Trades Generalist performs journeyman Roofing work including inspecting, repairing, maintaining and installing roofing, as well as Carpentry work as the secondary trade. Successful incumbent must follow verbal or written instructions and resolve most job related problems as they arise. Incumbent will perform the physical tasks required of a tradesperson, such as bending, lifting, stretching, climbing ladders and scaffolding, and being able to work in small areas. May be asked to respond to emergencies. Incumbent must also have a working knowledge of math used for the craft trades.
- Prioritize, plan and lay out work for new installations and alterations to existing items consistent with specification, building code, blueprints and plans. Inspect, repair, replace, and maintain a variety of roofing systems, including shingle, metal, EPDM, TPO, and built-up roofs.
- Identify and repair roof leaks using appropriate materials and methods.
- Clean and maintain roof drainage systems including gutters and downspouts.
- Apply waterproofing compounds and membranes where necessary.
- Use and maintain tools, machines, equipment and materials used in the carpentry and roofing trade. Work with a variety of materials in addition to wood, sheet metal, wallboard, plastics, aluminum.
- Prioritize, plan and layout work for new installations, alterations to existing installations and repairs consistent with building codes, while also reading blueprints and plans.
- Conduct inspections for the assigned areas to determine maintenance needs and recommend priorities for repair based on the maintenance problems.
- Estimate materials and labor required to complete a project. Plan new installations alteration to existing installations and major repairs consistent with specifications codes.
- Implement and enforce safety procedures and standards.
- Other Duties: As assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
Special Notes: This is a full-time position, 40 hours per week, Tuesday through Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. FLSA Nonexempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously. Mandatory rehire roster candidates have preference. SG 12 Hiring Rate $50,425. This position includes location pay of $4,000 per year.
