Motor Mechanical Design Engineer

  • Figure
  • San Jose, California
  • Full Time

Figure is an AI Robotics company developing a general purpose humanoid. Our humanoid robot, Figure 02, is designed for commercial tasks and the home. We are based in San Jose, CA and require 5 days/week in-office collaboration. It's time to build.

We are seeking a highly motivated Mechanical Design Engineer with a strong background in electric motor component design. You will be part of a fast-paced, cross-functional team building compact, high-performance actuators for a new class of humanoid robots. This role is ideal for an engineer with a few years of industry experience who thrives in a hands-on environment and is passionate about precision mechanical design, material selection, and rotor dynamics.

Responsibilities:

  • Own the mechanical design of motor subcomponents including rotor and stator laminations, shaft assemblies, and magnet retention structures
  • Design, release, and iterate complex lamination stacks for high-efficiency, high-speed permanent magnet motors
  • Collaborate closely with the electromagnetic, thermal, and control teams to ensure mechanical solutions meet overall system requirements
  • Work on magnet selection and adhesive strategies for permanent magnet rotors, with a focus on structural integrity and manufacturability
  • Perform structural FEA for rotor stress and rotor dynamics (burst speed, critical speed, balancing strategy)
  • Drive motor CAD in CATIA and manage BOMs and drawing packages from prototype to production
  • Oversee and support motor rotor balancing (static and dynamic)
  • Interface with vendors for lamination, shaft, and magnet sourcing and fabrication

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 2+ years of experience in mechanical design, preferably involving electric motors or rotating machinery
  • Strong fundamentals in stress analysis, material selection, and tolerance stack-ups
  • Experience designing for high-speed rotating systems, including consideration of burst strength and rotor balancing
  • Proficiency in CAD tools, preferably CATIA V5 or V6
  • Knowledge of adhesives, magnet bonding, and rotor manufacturing best practices
  • Strong communication skills and a team-first mindset

Bonus Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering with a focus on dynamics, materials, or electromechanical systems
  • Prior experience designing SPM (surface permanent magnet) rotors and stators
  • Hands-on experience with motor prototyping and test setups
  • Familiarity with FEA tools like Ansys Mechanical or Abaqus
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes such as lamination stamping, shrink fits, and adhesive curing

The US base salary range for this full-time position is between $130,000 and $160,000 annually.

The pay offered for this position may vary based on several individual factors, including job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package may also include additional components/benefits depending on the specific role. This information will be shared if an employment offer is extended.
