Summary:

Fessler and Bowman is responsible for successful bidding of projects, from the initial bid review and analysis through the hand-off from the Estimating Team to the Project Management Team. The Assistant Estimator is responsible for all aspects of the estimating function, including bid analysis, plan review, quantity take offs, subcontractor pricing collection, putting together bid information, and assessment of both winning and losing bids. The descriptions below are representative of, but not limited to, the duties and responsibilities of this position.

Five Key Roles of the Estimator:

  • Quantity Take-Offs: Perform detailed quantity take-offs from project plans and specifications, accurately measuring the quantities of concrete and materials required for each project.
  • Subcontractor and Supplier Coordination: Collaborate with subcontractors and suppliers to obtain pricing for various project components. Evaluate and compare quotes to ensure competitiveness and quality.
  • Cost Estimation: Assist in developing cost estimates for labor, materials, equipment, and other project expenses, while adhering to the company's cost guidelines.
  • Bid Preparation: Contribute to the preparation of comprehensive and competitive bids, including organizing all relevant bid documents and ensuring timely submission.
  • Risk Assessment: Support in identifying and evaluating project-specific risk factors, as well as proposing strategies to mitigate risks and enhance project success.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Estimator in reviewing project specifications and drawings to develop a comprehensive understanding of project requirements.
  • Perform take-offs, quantify materials, and estimate labor and equipment costs using industry-standard software and tools.
  • Collaborate with the Estimator to develop and refine bid strategies to maximize competitiveness while maintaining profitability.
  • Compile and organize all necessary bid documents, ensuring they are complete, accurate, and submitted on time.
  • Work closely with the Estimator and other team members to ensure that bid proposals align with the company's business objectives and strategic goals.
  • Provide support in post-bid activities such as value engineering and cost analysis to identify opportunities for cost savings.
  • Maintain effective communication and relationships with suppliers, subcontractors, and clients to facilitate a smooth bidding process.
  • Assist in tracking and managing project-related documents, such as drawings, specifications, and change orders, to ensure all parties have access to the latest information.
  • Contribute to a collaborative and goal-oriented work environment, cooperating with colleagues to meet project and company objectives.
  • Other relevant tasks as assigned.

Education, Experience & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field is preferred.
  • Creative and results-oriented, with a strong sense of urgency and self-motivation
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, with an adaptable and flexible style in working with all types of individuals.
  • Previous experience in construction or estimating is a plus.
  • Proficiency in construction estimating software and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Travel:

Travel to and from job sites and office locations is required for this position. Fessler & Bowman will compensate for travel when applicable.

Work Environment:

As an Assistant Estimator, you will be subject to various work environments. These environments include office and field settings. Employee must be comfortable with sitting for an extended period.
