Under general supervision of the Shop Foreman, this position performs skilled mechanical work in the maintenance, repair, and fabrication of County-owned vehicles and heavy equipment. The Mechanic provides roadside and emergency assistance, fabricates specialized components, and supports the daily operations of the Road, Bridge, and Junk Vehicle Department. This position does not supervise other County employees. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Vehicle and Equipment Maintenance: Maintains and repairs a wide range of vehicles and heavy equipment, including mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and electronic systems. Troubleshoots, inspects, and diagnoses issues to determine the scope and method of repair.
  • Fabrication and Modification: Designs, fabricates, and installs custom mechanical and electronic parts for older or specialized equipment. Develops component specifications and works with vendors when needed.
  • Preventative Maintenance: Develops and follows preventative maintenance schedules to ensure safe, efficient operation and extend equipment life.
  • Roadside and Emergency Repairs: Responds to on-site breakdowns or emergencies to provide diagnosis and repairs. Coordinates with County personnel, tow services, and public safety as appropriate.
  • Safety Monitoring: Maintains a safe working environment, follows all safety procedures, and identifies or reports hazards at project sites or in the shop.
  • Inventory and Procurement: Monitors and maintains parts, tools, and supply inventories. Evaluates vendor products and ensures proper storage.
  • Recordkeeping: Completes and maintains accurate records of repairs, inspections, maintenance, and inventory activity. Submits reports, timecards, and logs as required.
  • Collaboration: Works closely with the Shop Foreman, Road and Bridge crews, and other mechanics to coordinate maintenance needs, assist with projects, and support department operations.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Participate in department meetings, training, and inter-unit coordination efforts.
  • Assists with special projects or temporary duties as assigned.
  • May be called upon during declared emergencies to assist with response or recovery operations.
Supervision Exercised This position does not supervise other County staff. May provide guidance or instruction to less experienced mechanics or temporary employees.
  • Knowledge of diesel and gasoline engines, hydraulic and electronic systems, welding/fabrication, heavy equipment operation, and maintenance best practices.
  • Ability to use diagnostic tools and interpret service manuals and schematics.
  • Skilled in safe operation of power tools, shop equipment, and County vehicles.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong problem-solving and time management abilities.
  • Two years of post-secondary education or formal training in mechanics, machine tools, electronics, or related fields.
  • At least three (3) years of experience in automotive or heavy equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Must possess, or be able to obtain within six months of hire:
  • Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with air brake endorsement.
  • First Aid/CPR certification.
  • MSHA-46 certification.
  • Wildland Fire and Work Zone Safety Training.
Special Requirements
  • This is a safety-sensitive position and subject to drug and alcohol testing in accordance with the Countys Workplace Drug and Alcohol Policy. Pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion, and post-accident testing is required.
  • Must be able to lift 80 lbs. repeatedly and work in physically demanding, adverse environments.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions Work is primarily performed in a maintenance shop and outdoors under variable conditions. Frequent exposure to loud noise, hazardous substances, moving machinery, and inclement weather. Requires climbing, lifting, bending, reaching, crawling, and working in confined spaces or on uneven terrain. As a condition of hire, the final candidate will be required to successfully pass a criminal history check and background investigation and will be required to successfully pass pre-employment drug testing and will be subject to random drug and alcohol testing thereafter.
