The Scene & Production Carpenter is a temporary, project-based position (approx. 15 hrs/week) responsible to support the construction and installation of scenic elements for department productions for the 2025-2026 school year. This is ideal for professionals with theatrical carpentry experience. The role involves hands-on work in a collaborative, educational environment, helping bring stage designs to life.
What will I do in this position?
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Build and install scenic elements using relevant materials based on technical drawings, renderings, and build plans.
- Support all phases of production, including installation, striking, rigging, scenic painting, and props construction as needed.
- Operate and maintain shop tools and equipment safely and efficiently while upholding clean and organized working conditions in both the scene shop and performance spaces.
- Collaborate with student employees, designers, and faculty to ensure high-quality, on-time completion of scenic builds and installations.
- Perform other duties as requested or assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
- Proven experience with scenic carpentry
- Proficiency with standard carpentry tools, materials, and techniques
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and scenic designs
- Strong teamwork, communication, and time management skills
- Maintain a growing, personal relationship with Jesus Christ, reflect His character in all interactions, and faithfully uphold and embrace Northwestern's mission, Doctrinal Statement and Declaration of Christian Community
Nice To Have:
- Experience working in an academic or educational theatre setting
- Welding, rigging, or scenic painting skills
- Familiarity with automation systems, soft goods, or special effects
KEY SKILLS
- Independent & Teamwork: Capable of working both independently and collaboratively, with minimal supervision.
- Organizational Skills: Strong time management and problem-solving abilities; able to prioritize and meet deadlines with attention to detail.
- Technical Proficiency: Intermediate to advanced computer skills, including Microsoft Office and related software.
- Written & Verbal Communication: Strong writing, editing, proofreading, and verbal communication skills.
- Flexibility: Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed.
- Travel: Willingness and ability to travel occasionally for work-related purposes.
- Driver's License: Valid driver's license and access to reliable transportation.
- Background Check: Must pass initial and ongoing background checks as a condition of employment.
