Does leading the development of guidance for the Design Bureau, being part of a team developing best practices for Design projects, and becoming one of our agencys experts in this engineering specialty interest you? The individual in this position will also work closely with members of our highway design teams to ensure innovative Design protocols, provide creative solutions for Digital Delivery and represent the Design Bureau on various task forces and committees.

We are excited to hire a Transportation Engineer Specialist who will be an essential member of the Design Bureaus team, supporting the agencys focus on productivity. You will have the opportunity to work with a professional leadership team focused on providing outstanding engineering solutions to transportation challenges in service to the public.

Location: Ames, Iowa Design Bureau

Shift Requirements : Days, Monday through Friday. Flexible work hours available.

Our most successful candidate will have a thorough understanding of the highway development process, digital delivery, as well as the capability to research evolving practices in Highway Design, to aid the agency in deploying the most current and effective design guidance.

This individual will be an essential member of the team that collaborates with numerous stakeholders:

  • The individual would join a Team of 14 experts on the Methods Team, consisting of Automation, Standards / Design Manual, Geometrics, Roadside Safety and the Americans with Disabilities (ADA) group.

In this position, you will contribute to the agency by working on technical guidance that supports complex highway improvement projects that will require you to:

  • Develop Design Processes and Policies: The Office of Design has developed many design policies to provide instruction and guidance to designers. These documents form the Design Manual which is the primary reference for the Departments designers.
  • Develops highway design guidance that are engineered in harmony with national (American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials) and Iowa DOT design guidance.
  • Participates as part of a team to produce decisions that balance safety, mobility, environmental impacts, property impacts, cost, and long-term maintenance.
  • Research and investigate new ways to improve the performance of the transportation systems and roadway systems features incorporated into our transportation solutions.
  • Participate with Local and National Transportation groups.

Special Requirements:

  • Must have, or prior to appointment, must obtain an active Iowa professional engineering license through the Iowa Professional Licensing Bureau -Engineering and Land Surveying Examination Board.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Equivalent of four years of full-time licensed professional transportation or related civil engineering experience, one year of which must have included supervisory/managerial responsibility.

    3) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes one year of full-time work as a Transportation Engineer.
