Job Summary

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Academia Sinica Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics (ASIAA), Hawaii Operations office is located in Hilo, Hawai'i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE: $7,748.96 - $8,300/Mon.

DUTIES: Works with scientific and engineering staff to provide design, fabrication, testing, maintaining, and upgrading of electronic equipment for astronomical projects based in Hawai'i. Major duties in descending order of importance: (a) provides lead technical oversight for receiver and analog/front-end activities; (b) advises and mentors junior technicians, (c) engage in design, parts procurement, fabrication, assembly, and testing of new electronic instruments, modifications and upgrades; (d) troubleshoots, isolates, and identifies hardware problems, providing fault isolation and failure analysis, identifies improvements to minimize risk of future failures; (e) characterizes and maintains new and existing receiver and cryogenic systems; (f) documentation including organizing and maintaining electronic inventory of receiver labs and antennas. Required to drive themselves, ride with others and possibly drive others to any of the ASIAA Hawaii Operations project sites, and other locations in the community.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Electronics Engineering. (Associate's Degree from an accredited community college and at least two (2) years of relevant work experience may substitute for a Bachelor's Degree.).

EXPERIENCE: Seven to ten (7-10) years of postgraduate experience involving design, fabrication, maintenance and servicing of electronic equipment, cryogenics and Radio Frequency (RF) systems.

KNOWLEDGE: Must possess a strong understanding of working theories of RF, analog and digital circuitries, along with a proficient understanding of electrical and electronic concepts for manufacturing new designs as well as maintenance and analysis of existing designs. Familiar with current electronics and computing technologies. Understands principles of Computer-aided Design (CAD) programs that include schematic capture, circuit board layout and 3D printing.

ABILITIES & SKILLS: Must possess a proficient ability to understand complex electronic systems, diagnose and troubleshoot problems, and provide hands-on solutions to hardware issues. Ability to provide clear and concise self-expression in both verbal and written formats. Must possess a valid driver's license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver's insurance equivalent to Hawaii's No-Fault Driver's Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle. May be required to provide a clean driver's abstract as deemed necessary by the job requirements and/or the project. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate following the training provided within twelve (12) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment).

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS: Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to work at 14,000 feet and pass a post offer high-altitude medical examination. Must maintain medical clearance to work at high altitude throughout employment in this position.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience with microelectronic techniques and assembly. Experience working at a telescope facility or similar environment. Working knowledge of Linux environments and programming languages (C, python, etc.) is a strong plus. Experience with Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuit (MMIC) fabrication and assembly work. Experience with generating and maintaining documentation, e.g., for maintenance and record-keeping purposes. Use of CAD, electronic layout and simulation tools. Able to define specifications for items for purchase orders.
