Employees in this class perform responsible semi-skilled and skilled work in street maintenance and in the maintenance and construction of other town public works facilities. Key elements of the work involve semi-skilled to skilled work involving a variety of public works and related tasks. Equipment operation at a high skill level is a defining characteristic of the job. The leading of work crews in the absence of a crew supervisor is also expected of the position. Work involves the use of a variety of tools and light to heavy equipment. Work may involve participating in a variety of skilled trades such as carpentry, masonry, and other tasks. The employees are subject to hazards associated with public works including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards. Work is performed under the regular supervision of a Street Supervisor. The position serves as a lead worker over a crew and fills in for the Street Supervisor in his absence.

- Works on a crew to patch potholes, make utility cuts and re-surface streets; constructs and repairs sidewalks, curb and gutter and driveway aprons; constructs and cleans out storm sewers; digs drainage ditches and grades slopes.
- Pours and finishes concrete; assists with block and brick work.
- Uses a dump truck to load and haul materials and debris.
- Participates as a team member in large-scale public works projects.
- Serves as a lead worker in training and guiding other crew members.
- Installs street signs.
- Flags traffic.
- Works on leaf collection truck as needed.
- Trains and leads other workers in skilled tasks.
- Serves as a crew supervisor in the absence of the Street Supervisor.
- Performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in maintaining and repairing streets, sidewalks, and driveways.
- Performs specialized tasks as needed.
- Participates in snow removal.
- Gives job briefings and prepares paperwork on daily and weekly activities.
- Operates construction equipment including trucks, dump trucks, rollers, backhoes, tractors, loaders, and equipment at a high skill level.
- Assists other departments with various tasks.

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school with considerable experience in construction and heavy equipment operation.
Special Requirement
Possession of a valid North Carolina Driver License - CDL Class A with Class "N" Tanker endorsement.
Traffic zone flagging certification and forklift certification.
Physical Requirements
Work in this class is very physical and requires physical stamina and dexterity to lift heavy amounts for a sustained period. The employee must be able to physically perform the physical functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, talking, hearing and repetitive motions. Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pound of force occasionally; 50 to 75 pounds of force frequently; and 20 pounds constantly.
