Technical Program Manager II - AI/ML

The mission of the Allen Institute is to unlock the complexities of bioscience and advance our knowledge to improve human health. The mission of the Office of the Chief Technology Officer (OCTO) is not only to provide state of the art engineering infrastructure to the Allen Institute as a whole, but to also address high-risk, high-reward questions in biology through AI.

We are seeking a Technical Project Manager II to join our team and accelerate our AI/ML ambitions at the Allen Institute. This includes two main functions (1) support cross-functional teams in the scientific planning, execution and delivery of AI/ML projects (2) driving technical infrastructure initiatives that streamline how Allen Institute researchers and technologists access and scale AI/ML computational needs across multiple clouds.

Essential Functions

  • Lead the planning, execution, and tracking of complex, cross-functional AI/ML projects, acting as the team's central coordinator to improve velocity and remove roadblocks

  • Support the development of shared tools/components for model development and deployment

  • Support AI/ML infrastructure initiatives that streamline how teams access cost effective, elastic, scalable compute resources across multiple clouds

  • Own the training/documentation needed to onboard and support users of our centralized AI/ML infrastructure

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelors Degree or equivalent combination of degree and experience

  • Minimum 1 year of experience as a technical project or program manager working on projects related to AI/ML and/or advanced computational methods

  • Familiarity with AI/ML workflows, cloud service providers (AWS, GCP, Azure), cloud infrastructure, and orchestration tools

  • Demonstrated ability to implement appropriate project management methodologies and tools based on requirements, ranging from small exploratory projects to large scale collaborations

  • Ability to synthesize technical input from multiple stakeholders and translate it into actionable roadmaps or milestones

  • Comfortable navigating ambiguity in early-stage exploratory efforts while maintaining a bias toward execution and outcome tracking

  • Familiarity with common AI/ML frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, scikit-learn), experiment tracking tools (e.g., Weights & Biases, MLflow), and model deployment technologies

  • Proven ability to work collaboratively across diverse fields including computer science, research, and engineering teams

  • Proven ability to read, analyze, and create technical documentation

Preferred Education and Experience

  • 2-4 years of experience as a technical project or program manager working on projects related to AI/ML and/or advanced computational methods

  • Ability to manage projects with significant technical uncertainty and with multiple stakeholders

  • Familiarity with biological or life sciences data and imaging technologies

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including ability to communicate technical concepts to diverse audiences and ability to align stakeholders at multiple levels

  • Growth mindset, technical rigor and optimism about how computational algorithms can help accelerate biological research

Physical Demands

  • Fine motor movements in fingers/hands to operate computers and other office equipment

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • This role is currently on-site. We are a Washington State employer, and the primary work location for all Allen Institute employees is 615 Westlake Ave N.; any remote work must be performed in Washington State.

Travel

  • Potential travel to national and international conferences

Annualized Salary Range

*$111,300 - $137,700

* Final salary depends on the required education for the role, experience, level of skills relevant to the role, and work location, where applicable.
