POSITION TITLE: Carpenter Foreman

EXEMPTION STATUS: Non-exempt

REPORTS TO: Director of Facilities & Maintenance

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 12 month

Primary Purpose

Supervise and direct the daily activities of the carpenter shop including work in construction, alteration, repair, and installation of fixtures, buildings, and structures throughout the District. Maintain District structures and furniture in a pleasing and safe condition.

Qualifications

Education/Certification

High school diploma or GED, preferred

Valid Texas driver’s license

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of equipment, materials, methods, practices, and tools used in carpentry

Ability to use hand and power tools

Ability to follow written and verbal instructions

Ability to read blueprints and diagrams

Ability to measure and perform mathematical computations

Ability to work independently

Experience

Three years’ experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience; clear driving record

Major Responsibilities

Maintenance and Repair

  • Supervise the completion of cabinets, shelves, and partitions from initial layout to assembly using oral instructions, plans, specifications, blueprints, and work orders.
  • Receive work orders, select material and hardware, and make time and materials estimates.
  • Fabricate, repair, and replace doors, windows, flooring, ceiling materials, glass, building hardware, screens, and plastic laminate.
  • Construct and repair outdoor equipment including playground equipment, fences, gates, and bleachers.
  • Detect needed repairs on buildings, grounds, and equipment by following established inspection procedures.
  • Replace, repair, and finish furniture, cabinets, fixtures, and woodwork.
  • Assist in installing and moving portable buildings, including constructing steps and installing underpinning.
  • Inspect jobs upon completion, ensure areas are clean, and remove debris as needed.
  • Install, repair, rebuild, and service mechanical or electrical locking devices.
  • Install new or repaired tumblers into the lock to change combinations.
  • Cut new or duplicated keys.
  • Move lock pick in cylinder to open door locks without keys and open safe locks by drilling.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment
  • Work irregular hours and respond to emergencies after hours.

Personnel Management

  • Supervise the daily work of assigned staff.
  • Analyze and resolve work issues and assist workers in solving work problems.
  • Initiate or suggest plans to motivate workers to achieve work goals.

Records and Inventory

  • Maintain accurate records of materials, labor, and production.
  • Maintain inventory of District-owned tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Ensure employees follow timekeeping procedures for accurate payroll records.
  • Assist in maintaining records of District locks and keys.

Safety

  • Inspect machines and equipment for safety and efficiency.
  • Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in the work area and immediately report any conditions that are not correctable to the supervisor.
  • Interpret District policies and procedures to workers and enforce safety regulations.

Professional Growth and Development

  • Participate in professional learning, training programs, staff meetings, and special events as assigned.

Communication

  • Observe the standards of conduct for employees and comply with department and District procedures and policies.
  • Confer with other supervisors to coordinate activities of departments.
  • Communicate with principals and supervisors to complete projects.
  • Articulate the District’s mission and goals to the community and present a positive image of the District.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervise and evaluate the performance of carpenters.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors

  • Tools/Equipment Used: Standard carpentry equipment including small hand tools, power saw, planer, drill press, sander, band saw, table saw, radial arm saw, nail gun, air compressor, other power equipment, measuring devices, light truck or van.
  • Posture: Frequent standing, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, twisting; work in tiring and uncomfortable positions and tight and enclosed spaces
  • Motion: Frequent walking, climbing stairs/ladders/scaffolding, repetitive hand motions, wrist flexion/extension, grasping/squeezing, overhead reaching; frequent driving
  • Lifting: Lifting and carrying up to 30 pounds without assistance, 30-55 pounds with assistance, and more than 55 pounds with appropriate assistance
  • Environment: Work outside and inside; on slippery or uneven surfaces; on ladders and scaffolding; around machinery with moving parts; exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, fumes, toxic chemicals and materials, noise, vibration, electrical hazards; may work alone; frequent District wide travel; occasional irregular and/or prolonged hours
