As the Safety Project Engineer you will be responsible for continuous improvement in safety by supporting the safety, operations, and maintenance teams to develop solutions and drive projects to completion. You will work closely with the team to understand concerns and root causes of incidents, and develop plans to implement the more complicated corrective actions to reduce risks. This position reports to the Health & Safety Manager.

Essential Functions and Primary Responsibilities:

  • Must follow Ahlstrom's manufacturing and hygiene processes, procedures and policies, as applicable, to the position's areas of responsibility, in order to meet and maintain the safety, quality, and regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Provide support throughout the facility to reduce risk and improve safety.
  • Support root-cause analysis investigations understand issues following safety incidents or reported hazards, and work with the team members to identify and implement solutions.
  • Utilize continuous improvement processes to identify and eliminate high-risk tasks through review of historical incident data, risk assessments, and safety audits.
  • Identify, implement and solidify best-known preventive/compliance safety and health standards and practices into all operations.
  • Ensure adequate safety and health controls are properly designed, installed, trained and operating on equipment.
  • Design process/mechanical systems/equipment to provide a useful and safe workplace, and ensure projects meet safety codes, specifications and budgetary limitations.
  • Ensure new systems are compatible with existing systems and operate without causing issues.
  • This is not an exhaustive list of duties or functions and may not necessarily comprise all the "essential functions" for purposes of the ADA.

Minimum Occupational Requirements:

  • A mechanical engineering degree or similar background and at least 2 years of experience in a manufacturing environment, internship/co-op included.
  • Ability to successfully plan and lead projects to completion.
  • Ability to effectively present information to executive management and public groups, and to facilitate meetings.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs, i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc. Experience in pulp and paper mill operations preferred but not required.
  • Regular attendance at work is required. Ability to work additional hours during the week, on weekends, or outside of regular office hours may be required.
  • The ability to work in a normal office environment to include: sitting or standing for long periods of time, operating various standard office equipment, carrying paper documents/files, reaching and bending, speaking on the telephone.
