Job Description
Perform complex diagnostic procedures and repairs of light-duty, medium-duty, and heavy-duty units for the City of Tyler. Tasked with the most challenging and time-sensitive vehicle repairs. They will spend the majority of their time on unusual and most difficult problems and repairs. Specialized in using a variety of computerized systems to complete work. Needs minimal supervision from superior staff
- Considered essential emergency personnel.
- Read repair requests on work orders.
- Communicate and listen to the operator about complaints and issues.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot problems and make a determination for the repairs needed.
- Order the necessary parts for repairs
- Perform a variety of major and minor repairs to both gasoline and diesel units.
- Test drive the unit to verify the repair is complete and the unit is in safe operating order.
- Update computerized work orders with necessary labor times, mileage, or hours.
- Update computerized repair notes with a detailed description of repairs performed.
- Assist other mechanics as needed. Develop team members for growth.
- Perform quality assurance inspections of other technicians' repairs.
- Perform service calls on units in the field. Make temporary repairs or have the unit towed in.
- Cut, weld, and fabricate parts as needed.
- Must be able to drive and operate vehicles and equipment.
- Must be able to work overtime as needed.
- Must be able to communicate effectively with management and keep the supervisor informed of issues
- Must be able to communicate effectively with other employees and maintain positive working relationships.
- Must be able to communicate effectively with operators of the units needing repairs.
- Must have the skill and ability to maintain appropriate written and computer records.
- Must be able to operate a variety of computer software and diagnostic tools and look up diagnostic codes.
- Must be able to make repairs efficiently in accordance with national labor guides.
- Must be able to stand 1 - 5 hours; walk to 1 hour
- Must be able to lift 100lbs occasionally and 50-75 pounds regularly
- Must be able to climb ladders, stoop, bend, or be on the ground as needed.
- Must be able to work in harsh conditions of all kinds: weather, noise, dust, smells, and insects.
- Must have the ability to use pneumatic and hand tools.
- Must be able to use hands constantly.
- Must keep the work bay organized, neat, and clean always.
- Must always follow all safety policies and procedures.
- Must know how to operate various vehicle lifts, jacks, jack stands, forklift, and overhead crane.
- Must have extensive knowledge of automotive service techniques
- Must have extensive knowledge of electrical systems and be able to read wiring schematics and blueprints
- Must have extensive knowledge of hydraulic systems and be able to read schematics and blueprints.
- Must have extensive knowledge of brake systems, air, and hydraulic.
- Must have extensive knowledge of mechanical failures in both light and heavy-duty units.
- Must be able to perform complex diagnostics of unusual vehicle problems.
Education and Experience: Education and Experience: High School graduate or GED. Must have a technical certificate or degree and a minimum of 5 years' verifiable experience in a major mechanic facility, or 10 years of verifiable experience in
a major mechanic facility without a technical certificate or degree. Must own a full complement of hand tools
up to 1 inch and toolboxes in which to store them. Must possess safety-toed shoes. Must possess a valid Texas
