TITLE: WATER SYSTEMS OPERATOR

DEPARTMENT: PUBLIC WORKS

SUPERVISOR: UTILITIES/SOLID WASTE PROGRAM MANAGER

LOCATION: WELLPINIT, WA

STATUS: NON-EXEMPT, FULL-TIME

RATE OF PAY: $25.00 - $31.83 PER HOUR

INTRODUCTION:

To assist with the day-to-day operations of the Utilities and Solid Waste Departments. This position shall perform all plumbing, septic, or drain problems related to residential or City system with water or sewer. Will perform I.H.S projects and work beside I.H.S representatives and assist E.P.A when needed.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Will respond to service calls in the order they are taken, emergencies take priority.
  • Should be able to work with minimum supervision.
  • Will be required to run septic truck.
  • Operate heavy equipment such as backhoe, dozer, loaders.
  • Operate dump trucks or garbage trucks when needed.
  • Provides written or oral reports as requested.
  • Provides day-to-day equipment and vehicle maintenance.
  • Will help in monitoring water and sewer systems.
  • Will help fill in with Solid Waste or Water/sewer department as needed.
  • Will perform other job duties as needed or required.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED FOR POSITION:

  • Must have knowledge of pipe repair for water or sewer.
  • Knowledge of vehicle/heavy equipment repair.
  • Must be able to work with other departments/I.H.S representatives/E.P.A.
  • Must be able to dig ditches accurately and install waterline equipment per job as required.
  • Knowledge of the Spokane Tribes Utility and Solid Waste Programs responsibilities.
  • Must be able to work with other departments as needed.
  • Working with water and sewer line repairs.
  • Required experience in operating heavy machinery including backhoe, excavator, mini-excavator, skid-steer and crawler bulldozer.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have a high school diploma or GED.
  • Willing to travel for training as needed.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be willing and able to work in all kinds of environments, different types of weather, and may work with hazardous materials.
  • Must posses a valid WA State Driver's License, and be tribally insurable.
  • This position is a safety/sensitive position and is subject to random alcohol/drug testing.
  • At time of employment must successfully clear a criminal background inquiry.
  • Required experience in operating heavy machinery including backhoe, excavator, mini-excavator, skid-steer and crawler bulldozer.
  • Must have a current CDL and a good driving record.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 608 Technician Training for the disposal of appliances that contain regulated refrigerants.
  • Tribal Preference Applies - Tribal Preference grants preference in employment to qualified enrolled Spokane Tribal Citizens, Spouses of Spokane Tribal Citizens, First Line Descendants of Spokane Tribal Citizens, and Citizens of other Tribes and Other Applicants, in that order.
  • Safety Sensitive Background - Requires a higher standard of performance and behavior.
