Maintenance Technician II - Carpenter

Non-exempt (compensatory and/or overtime eligible; additional compensation to include County provided uniforms and tools); full-time; 40 hours per week; Monday - Friday; 7:30 a.m. - 4 p.m.; full-benefits

This skilled position is responsible for performing carpentry installation, maintenance repair and painting of various Frederick County buildings and facilities. Work performed will include a wide variety of tasks in the building maintenance and/or renovation trades. Supervision is received from the Lead Renovation Crew, or Assistant Chief of Facility Maintenance.

NOTE: The upper pay range reflects possible wage rates for internal County transfers and promotions, which are calculated per County policy. For external hires, offers are made at the base wage rate, with limited exception.

  • Perform all manner of carpentry tasks related to building maintenance and repair, both interior and exterior
  • Interior and exterior painting of county buildings using various types of coatings, stains, and sealers
  • Finish carpentry tasks related to trim work, custom door and window installations, cabinet installations, and finishing stain grade millwork.
  • Operate power tools to install, maintain and repair; door hardware, doors and frames, partitions, floors, window frames, screens, panes and sashes, striping, shelving and cabinets, wall paneling, and roofs
  • Install and service locks, locking hardware and panic devices
  • Inspect jobs in progress and upon completion
  • Measure future job sites to estimate time and materials needed
  • Install and repair roof, gutters and drainage pipes
  • Install acoustical tile and sheetrock to include up to a level 5 finish
  • Address and manage work orders
  • Maintain and stock the service truck
  • Coordinate the work of other Maintenance workers assigned to carpentry tasks
  • Move equipment and furniture when necessary
  • Assist with the maintenance, repair and operation of electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning systems in all County buildings
  • Perform other related duties as required

  • High school graduation or the equivalent
  • Minimum 2 years of commercial carpentry work experience
  • Possession of a valid automobile operator's license

KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:

  • Ability to maintain County Authorized Driver privileges
  • Knowledge of trim carpentry and techniques with the ability to efficiently and accurately cut trim.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques, materials, tools and equipment used in carpentry tasks and maintenance
  • Knowledge of locks, locking hardware and panic devices, with ability to make repairs and complete installations
  • Knowledge of hazards associated with carpentry and other building maintenance work, with ability to recognize and employ appropriate safety measures
  • Ability to accurately diagnose carpentry problems and make the necessary repairs and alterations to finish a project with little to no guidance
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to recognize unfinished or up to a "custom-home" level work with the initiative to complete these unfinished tasks
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public
  • Ability to effectively read and interpret building plans and specifications
  • Ability to accurately estimate labor and material costs
  • Ability to effectively perform the duties of other building maintenance trades
  • Effective written and spoken (English) communication skills, including the ability to accurately prepare and maintain related forms and reports

PREFERENCE MAY BE GIVEN FOR:

  • Current Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) Lead certification
  • Trim carpentry work experience
  • Additional education in a construction related field

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • While working in this position, the employee is required to frequently walk, lift up to 50 pounds, and drive; occasionally sit, climb/ascend/descend, lift over 50 pounds, push up to and over 40 pounds, pull up to and over 40 pounds, reach and perform repetitive motions; and rarely stoop/kneel/crouch and crawl
  • While working in this position, the employee is required to constantly work indoors, and walk on uneven ground; frequently works outdoors, in dirty and dusty environment; occasionally works in hot temperatures (above 100 degrees) and cold temperatures (below 32 degrees), and works in a noisy environment; and rarely works in confined spaces, at heights, below ground level, works near machinery and has potential exposure to infectious diseases
  • Available for varied working hours as needed and available for on-call emergency situations
